The error message is normally caused by either plugging accessories into the rip controller board or the engine board. In some models the board may be conbined. Or invalid or illegal commands sent from the printer. Try upgrading the firmware first. If that does not work you you may have a bad board. I too ran into this problem. Printer is about 2-1/2 yrs old.
Using it as a network device. I updated firmware from
a Mac OS X computer on the network.
a. Uploaded the firmware by going to lexmark site.
Do this first in preparation of upgrading firmware.
Follow instructions to get firmware update.
b. power cycle the printer (turn off & unplug power from unit)
c. power printer and turn switch back ON.
happily printer stays alive long enough to upload the new
firmware update.
d. Log on to your printer via a computer on your network
Open a browser, address will be your printer's IP address
or dns name. ex: http://192.168.1.3 (note: if you password
protected the account, you will need that info)
e. Follow menu to Configure -> Update Code where you will
"browse" to the file on your local computer (ex:
LSSTN234.FLX) and then hit the FLASH button

a 900 rip error is the engine card. located behind the system board (formatter) if you can get the printer to a ready state you can phone 1800lexmark and get a pin code from them costs about 15 bucks. if this flash does not work you will likley need a new engine card.

Hi,
This is a call for service message generally requiring professional repair.
There are generally only four reasons:
No power, Check fan power leads as one may have slipped off it's fitting
Jammed: Either too dirty or a shred of paper may be blocking the blades, pull free and clean off with compressed gas(no more than 25ft/lbs)
Dead fan: Call a repair man or call lexmark and give them the exact code, they will identify the fan and can sell you the part.
Dead controller board: as with above call a repair man or lexmark with code and order spare part.
The only bad news other than you may need a repairman, if you order the fan or controller board it may be the other and no way to know ahead in some cases.
The good news, if you're still under warranty, lexmark has good repairmen and fast response times in most areas.
Either way, Hope this helps FixYa,
Chris
