Just move the cursor to safe mode then press enter. The PC will then load up everything one thing at a time. If you end up fully loaded you can then, shut it down and start it normally. The computer will tell you of any problems, during safe mode start up.

SOURCE: Forgot username for admin acc in windows xp

Forgetting your Windows administrator login password. With no way to get into the system, you can’t even perform basic maintenance, let alone a thorough tune-up. Formatting is always an option, but we consider that a last resort. (Plus, guess who’s going to have to help reinstall all the programs lost after a wipe?) But all hope is not lost. There are a few ways to actually retrieve a lost Windows account password. Read on, and we’ll show you the light.

1st Method:
The first thing which you check if you forget login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account "Administrator" and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:
Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ctrl+alt+del keys twice and it'll show Classic Login box. Now type "Administrator" (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.
Now you can reset your account password from "Control Panel -> User Accounts".
Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

2th Method:
There are a lot of Windows password revealers and crackers available, but we’ve found that Windows Password Recovery Tool is the most effective.:
Windows Password Recovery Tool is one of the easiest password recovery tools to use. It allows you to reset a user account password, including the Administrator password. It is also a relatively small download.

Forgot Windows XP password? The first thing which you check is whether you forgot windows xp login password or not. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account "Administrator" and sets its password to blank. So if you have forgot your user account password then try this:

Windows XP and further versions also provide another method to recover forgotten Password by using "Reset Disk". If you created a Password Reset Disk in past, you can use that disk to reset the password. Or try free program called Ophcrack or Windows Password Recovery Tool 3.0.

I have forgotten my password to my dell c521 computer, not the system password

As far as I know, there are a lot of tools and utilities that can be downloaded and used to recover, retrieve, reset windows password. However, I've tried a couple of these utilities through the years. The free software can help you, but you have to learn some computer skills and waste a lot time on learning. If you want to save more time, maybe Google third party password recovery tool or Google Window Password Seeker can help you.

Ubuntu installation

Relax Sairam -- you don't have know all these answers.

First step, download Ubuntu and burn to a CD .

Second adjust your bios if necessary to change the boot preferences on your machine, so that it will try your CD/DVD device first before trying to boot from a hard disk.

Third, let the Ubuntu Live CD execute and bring up a desktop. On the desktop, there should be an icon to actually install Ubuntu. It will guide your through all the decisions that you need to make.

You may find it advantageous to have a "dual boot" configuration on your machine... i.e., having the choice of running some windows operating system, or ubuntu.

Trying to run ubuntu

It sounds like Ubuntu chose a screen resolution that your monitor doesn't support. For the sake of sanity, I would a reboot and then try booting to Windows to ensure that what camone311 suggests happened isn't so -- I doubt it, as the install process is more involved than just 1 click - there are SEVERAL variables (time, date, username, passwords, how much of the hard drive to use, etc) that have to be set before anything is written to the hard drive.

If you're able to boot to Windows, then I would boot back to the CD and give it another go. At the menu where it says Try Ubuntu... there's an option to change the graphics modes - I would try safe graphics mode or VESA to see if that fixes the black screen problems that you were having.

Ntldr is missing

seems your MBR is damage. but you can repair it if only you can boot in windows cd and entering in the recovery console.

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1.    Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2.    When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3.    If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4.    When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5.    At the command prompt, type this commands one at a time.

FIXMBR  C:
FIXBOOT  C:
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTLDR  C:\
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTDETECT.COM  C:\
BOOTCFG  /rebuild

6.    To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

no warranty...you use on your own risk :)
