The red reset button under the upper thermostat cover keeps tripping

it's not the thermostat it's the element they are whats in the water and when the seperate thats what trips it,, you need to drain the unit with the electric off and do not turn the power back on till water is comming out of the hot side faucet they must be in the water before the power is turned on

Hello. If you turn off the power and drain the tank then examine each of the heating elements you will find that the upper element is deteriorated. The fix is to replace the heating element. Actually though my practice is when one is bad the other isn't far behind so for a few dollars I change both when I have the tank drained. Joe

You need to check your heating elements. also check for any loose wires as you may have a fire hazard as well.
