I was going to tell you that you need to download a driver from the simpletech web site that allows it to run under Vista. But, I went to the simpletech web site for you and took a look. All of the products I could find (ie: simpleshare, thumb drive, desktop drive, network drive...) haveonly drivers for Windows 98 or WIndows Millineum! If you have one of these, they probably dont support it under Vista. It is usually the way companies get us out of older technologies and push us into their newer products. SOunds like a conspiract theory, but its the truth. Anyway, if you have a newer model I havce not run across on the site, may i havce the model number to check? Google freeware program called Key Finder. May work, lost sticker on computer once and downloaded this and it gave me the key when I clicked on it . Of course you will have to download
Windows disk first and then load Key Finder. Would burn on CD before you load Windows. Worth a shot.

You may use data recovery software to see if you can rescue the files. It may unable to recover all the files, but at least most of them.

For the Lexmark 1270, go to www.lexmark.com and click on DRIVERS AND DOWNLOADS. Then use the DRIVER FINDER. In SEARCH BY MODEL, type in 1270 and you can choose a driver from there.
