Try plugging in a pair of headphones. I tried it without the speakers connected and since it found the headphones and they were OK the system came out of protect mode.

This just happen to my mother, the reason was because the speakers she was using were overloading the unit itself. She has 3 big speakers in the kenwood xd-a55 unit; I unplugged all except one, the unit works just fine now, so check your speakers, it just dose it to protect your unit.

I had the same problem with a jvc stereo set, it turned out the two cables of a speaker were touching each other.

You have a failed output amp most liekly and it will take some troubleshooting to repair. My recommendation would be to take it in to a service center for repair.

Stereo goes into protect mode

Protect is a safety feature so that you do not blow your speakers. However with it hooked up with the computer you may have surpassed the max output. If it still does this with out going through the computer, it has been damaged.

Security Code for Protect mode

Turn on the car so the radio is flashing "Protect." Look on the front / removable face of the stereo. On it you will find a small round hole - that's a reset button. Find a small paper clip, unfold the clip and stick it gently into the hole. The "Protect" will stop flashing, and Kenwood will be displayed. Unfortunately all your settings/presets will be gone, but at least the stereo is working again!

Protect error

The 'Protect' error means there is a DC voltage present in the output section(which should not be there). This can be caused by a defective output IC(the big IC on the heatsink). Disconnect the IC and see if the error goes away. Also check the resistors around the IC.
