Mine did the same thing. I unpluged , and carfully took top off where I found a CD stuck. I carefully rermoved CD and put back together. When I plugged it back in I heard a click and the display lit up and I was good to go. I might have just lucked out.

I have a Sony MHC-GX555 stereo and every time I try to open the disc tray it either flashes EX-Change or mechanical error and it won't open.

The unit is in protect mode because a problem was deteected in the final output stage of the amplifier. The pop in the speakers is a god indication that there is DC current in the output stage. This is not a good thing. This is a relatively common failure of all receivers and can easily be fixed by any shop that does audio repair. Expect a parts cost in teh $30-$40 range.
