Problem started about 4 months after first battery replacement...done by a jeweler. Called TIMEX repair customer service today 1-800-448-4639. They indicated the watch behavior of random display resets, followed by displaying the error code "814017" at the bottom of the display, is due to a circuit board problem which would cost approx. $30 to repair (due to out-of-warranty). The no. "814" is engraved on the back of my watch case. Makes me wonder if that watch series has some glitch or design anomaly. First I'll try Solution #2, and if that doesn't work, I'll buy a non-TIMEX watch.

While I was looking for pictures specific to resetting this watch, I came across your post and thought to reply. I recently replaced the batteries on my watch, which I have owned for nearly 7 years. It is an Ironman Triathlon 100 Lap watch. When I replaced the batteries this time, I forgot to reset, in essence reboot the system, by using a metal needle point tweezers to briefly connect the positive side of the battery to the "AC" pad on the small circuit board for at least 2 seconds. I remembered to do this with at all the other times I had replaced the battery and did not have any troubles after it. This time I forgot and now have the same issue you described. I am not sure where the "AC" pad is on the back of the module. But, it should be apparent if I did it correctly in the past.
Give that a try before sending it off to be repair and wasting time, money and trouble.

Timex brand is very average, so, you can't expect it to work as, let's say any genuine Swiss watch. At the same time even the most expensive watches in the world has faults quite offten.
For the cheap labour Timex have moved all the equipment to the Malaisia and now 99% of Timex watches are manufactured there. That doesn't mean they are lower quality if they would be manufactured in Europe or USA.
You've just have been unlucky to have the one with faulty circuitboard and there isn't much you can do about it. Circuitboards CAN NOT be repaired - only replaced. If 30$ sounds to you a lot (that includes: ordering the part, shipping costs, labour of watchmaker, testing when fitted + the part itself), then the best advise for you will be to buy a new watch. There are plenty to choose from and novadays you can get the decent watch (exept mechanical) without braking your bank account.
