Stuck zoom is the most common failure mode for a digital camera. Some
common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with
this problem include "E18 lens error", or "lens error, restart camera".
Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise
as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the
lens won't even move.
The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera
brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension
mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the
camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its
extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended.
A camera owner that suffers this problem may have no recourse for
having the camera repaired. Many camera makers will not honor repairing
this problem under warranty as they claim it is due to impact damage to
the camera, or sand or debris getting into the lens gearing mechanism
(neither of which is covered under warranty). The quoted repair cost is
usually close to or more than what the camera is actually worth.
This part can be easily replaced in most cameras. The following video shows how to open a Nikon Coolpix P80:
First check the battery for full charge. This may be a damaged lens system. Lens error is usually E18 or text "lens error" or other error message.
What you both can try is something I have tried and fixed some cameras. As the camera starts, gently push in on the lens or pull..that may be able to be determined by the way the lens acts. You have to study carefully the lens as it is extending to see what happens. If any noise is present as it is extending, then you may have internal parts which are broken in the lens. Sell it for parts on a site such as Ebay. List it as is, parts, or repair. take care,
If you want to be able to use optical zoom try getting a more advanced camera because cameras like Nikon Coolpix 4300 does`nt have quality zoom its very poor and you can see it yourself the images gets blurry when maximize your zoom.
Based on your description, it certainly sounds like the zoom button is stuck or shorted. If you're comfortable with taking it apart, I'd try getting to the zoom electronics and see if there's any noticeable damage.
Whenever I try something like this, I like to see how much damage I could cause first. eBay has sold this item for less than $50 with shipping (just in case you break something). You can also look there for parts cameras -- one listed for $10 with free shipping that might give you what you need.
If the lens assy is not responding to zoom buttons then the camera is in confusion mode due to a sensor being blocked or defective. Normally it would go thru a startup cycle to initialise position of various parts in the lens assy and give back control to you but in your case it is not getting that signal and in your case I would bet on the end sensor.
