Need more information to make an accurate diagnosis, try removing the front panel (two screws at bottom) and visually check first the belt (all the way around) and then the springs that hold the tub suspended.
I would bet on the belt.

What could be the cause of loud thumping during spin?

Sounds like one of the balancing springs either broke or came off.

I have a 2012 top loading frigidaire gallery washer. It recently started making a loud thumping noise during the wash cycle. When it spins out it smells like burnt rubber. Any ideas? Thanks

There is a rubber belt between the motor and the rotating cylinder.
If it is frayed, then part of the belt is hitting something during the "wash" cycle, and rubbing much faster during the "spin" cycle.
Replace the belt.

During the spin cycle there is a very loud knocking noise,

Could be the spider arms are broken. You can confirm this by turning the tub by hand, if you hear any kind of thumping sound as you turn the tub, then the spider is broken. The spider is the support arms that hold the wash tub to the drive shaft. It's very expensive to repair.

If there is no thumping sound when you turn the drum, it could be that one of the supports or spring is broken. Hope this helps.

Loud thumping noise during spin.......not related to unbalance....manually turning the tub makes a loud noise.

Bearings shot or counter weights have come loose

Take the top off and check the weights first

Washer makes loud, thumping noises during spin cycle.

support bracket that supports the tub is breaking. stick your hand inside and push up and down and see if its coming apart. if u look at it when it runs does it wobble?(the tub) if not take a look at the pulley on the back and see if its wobbly.

Tub makes loud thumping noise when spinning

Good morning! It's common to hear a loud thumping noise during spinning because the load (clothes) are not properly place in the tub. Please try to put the load in order & compress it down. best regards.

Loud clicking/thumping in rinse and spin cycle

It doesn't look like a motor problem !!! It seems like an unbalanced tub issue. The machin has suspension dampers and suspension rods, and it's look like one of them was damaged or "run away" from its location during machin's movement. Goog luck !!
