This is a software compatibility issue, it's easily fixed by connecting the PS3 to the internet, logging into your PSN account and running a system update. It will update the software and get you a new encryption key. It's part of the movie's copy protection.

Here's how to renew PS3 encryption key when you have internet connection.

  • 1. Turn on your PS3, make sure there's no game disc in it so that you can get right into the main interface.
  • 2. Go straight to Settings>System Update, and this time, highlight the first option, which is Update via the Internet. And then press X to confirm your choice. The update process will start and all you need to do is follow the on-screen instructions.

You can just connect your PS3 to the Internet and update the software so that the encryption key can be renewed and you can play the Blu-ray disc. Another choice is to rip your Watchmen Blu-ray to MP4 and transfer it to a USB drive to watch on your PS3, here's how to rip Blu-ray to MP4: How to Rip and Convert Blu ray to MP4 with Blu ray to MP4 Converter

Won't play a blue ray disc

The blueray eye is out. You will need a new blueray player. The only problem with that is the ps3 will only respond with the orginal parts it came with. ( i.e. motherboard blueray player ) So the best bet is to buy a broken blueray player and take the eye out and replace it with yours just the eye not the whole thing.

I have had my ps3 80gb for a couple of years now but have never tried to play a blueray disc untill today. An on screen message states that I must renew the encryption key. Perform a system software update...

You will not be able to play some newer disc because of the technology embedded in them. The updates allow for those necessary files to be implemented into your system giving it the ability to play games and blu rays. Get your system updated.

Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Follow the instructions on the website at: www.playstation.com (the update will be at the bottom of the page, on the right side.)

Bought a blue ray movie to try out on ps3 now it asks for an encryption key, wth? i don't hook my ps3 to inter net, but asking for a system software update to renew encryption key to play blue ray

-= Renew PS3 Encryption Key =-

If i was you i wouden update. the latest update sony have provided is causing alot of problems, such as not being able to read blue-ray movies and games. (3.00/3.01)

I know you dont see it this way, but i acaully see you as a very lucky person that you havent updated your machine yet, my ps3 dont work anymore after i updated, or it does work, but it just cant read any blueray games or movies.

But if you have a ps3 slim you probaly wont have this problem, its more older models that suffer under this bug. :(

i dont know what your current firmware is, but if its way below 2.80, then your still in the safe zone, cuz if you own a usb memory stick you can transfer the 2.80 update to ( USB-ROOT\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP ) and then unplug it from your computer and insert it into your ps3 and then try the update from local storeage.

i hope you can use this :o)

Ps3 not reading disc

See if a DVD works. For me, I know my Bluray is ruined because I can watch DVDs and play PS2 games fine but anything Bluray does not work. If a DVD does not work, you have more of a problem, if DVD does work you need a new BlueRay which Sony should take care of for you. If you don't have receipt, etc. like me you can buy a new Bluray (KES-400AAA) on Ebay and use this guide to install it http://edpsystemssupport.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=45.
Hope that helps.
