Need plastic handle on Rival Crockpot lid.

The plastic handle on the glass lid of my rival crockpot has broke.
The plastic handle attaches to the glass top via a simple screw.

I'd like to purchase just a new plastic handle, not a new glass lid with plastic handle already attached.

The replacement glass lid costs over half the price of the entire crockpot.

I do have the same problem. I am looking for a replacement for the handle.

Yep! My handle broke as well.

Don't want to buy the entire lid.

    Rival, help us out!

Plastic handle on glass lid has cracked and come completely off. With poor customer service from Rival and phone service on replacement for handle or lid, my next crockpot won't be a Rival.

  • Anonymous Dec 14, 2007

I have the same problem. Called Rival and they're totally useless! They said they don't even have a new lid in stock, let alone the plastic handle, and they said they don't know when they'll have new lids either, to just keep calling back. Like I have time for that! This is rediculous!!!!

I have model DHP 4903 and plastic handle broke. When is Rival going to address this problem. By reading the other comments on the problem it dosen't look like Rival is very interested in helping out its customers. My next crock pot certainly will not be a Rival.

Well glad to hear that mine is not an isolated incident. This was the crockpot of my dreams. The others I had, the side handles on the unit broke and I thought I was home free. Well guess my hubby will fix it somehow. I think I paid almost $100 bucks for it when I bought it new a few years back.

  • Anonymous Dec 19, 2007

Obviously they manufactured faulty lid handles. Is there any other alternative to buying a whole new crock pot.

  • paxbus Dec 24, 2007

Same problem. Plastic that holds handle in place has not held up to the heat. I have not used it enough to cause that type of damage. I would call it a factory defect. I'm not willing to replace the entire lid at a cost of buying a new pot. Will go with a different brand to get a better design. - Becky

Yes I too have a broken lid on my crockpot.

1/3/08  Contacted Rival about the smart pot handle replacement.  Was told they do not sell the replacement part.  They did say they would send me a new unit, but I did not want to take advantage of this offer since it seemed wasteful to me.  I'd rather just use a knob from the hardware store, since it'd be more durable and I could pick out something more attractive.  Good Luck All.

need just handle on lid. would like order form to order part, have requsted address or 1-800 number to reach company so I can order part.

  • Anonymous Jan 04, 2008

I have the same problem on not one but TWO Rival crockpots, and Rival doesn't make it easy to get replacement handles or lids. Perhaps this is a way of Rival making more money by people buying completely new crockpots just to replace the lids? Perhaps the plastic handles can't handle the wear and tear of the dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave?

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2008

I have the same problem. The plastic handle broke down to the screw. I would like to buy a new plastic handle to screw back on. Can you buy just the plastic Handle????

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2008

Same problem. Need plastic handle for glass lid. Didn't know where to get this. Thought I would start on the internet and the company could mail me one. I guess other people are having the same problem. Someone could actually get hurt. Tough using the crock pot when you have to take the lid off with a pair of plyers.

I had the same thing happen,as did my mother. Creative person she is , tied a piece of string through the remaining piece--it works great. Me, I'm getting a different brand!!

  • stretch1000 Jan 09, 2008

Read everyone's comments for replacement of broken handles like mine and i wanted to let eveyone know what i did to fix the problem. The main problem is you cannot get replacement handles or even lids for your exact model type. It seems Crock pot manufacturers want you to go out buy a new one...but not me.

There are 2 solutions i can see that work. #1 is that you go to a Goodwill or bargin store and buy a cheap pot lid, since most handles and screws are the same diameter, most will work for any crock pot lid handle opening. #2 and my preferred option is to go to a hardware store and buy a cheap 50cent plastic cabinet knob that has a wood screw that can screw all the way in. I put it on my crock pot lid and have been happy ever since. Porcelain cabinet knobs and standard screws leave a cabinet wide gap hence the wood screw option.

    Hope that helps

I have same problem with Rival Model 38601 - the round base of the handle cracked up. I can't use the pot safely anymore. Where to purchace a replacement??

  • Anonymous Jan 14, 2008

I have the very same problem with my 38601,it seems the lid handles grow brittle after a short time of use.

  • Gooman Feb 05, 2008

I have a relatively new Rival SCV401 smaller oval crockpot that's been gently used and the lid's plastic handle broke off, leaving a small bit of plastic around the screw. There's no way to repair this and no parts available that I can find online. I may just "MacGyver" it and put a heat proof rope attached to where the screw is...otherwise I really love this slow cooker!!!

  • Anonymous Feb 11, 2008

The handle brook on my brand new rival cooker the first itme I used it..store told me to contact you

  • Anonymous Mar 09, 2008

After using the crockpot just a few times, the lid handle cracked in half but was still usuable. After a few more times, it is completely gone. Seems like Crock Pot should send replacements for free being that many people have had the same problem.

  • kara150 Mar 09, 2008

I bought a Rival SCVP550-B crockpot and on the very first usage the plastic lid handle came off!! The pot was fine otherwise. I took it back where I bought it and got a Hamilton Beach, which is fine. Based on the number of complaints, I would think Rival should start addressing their quality issue.

  • Anonymous Mar 12, 2008

The handle on my Crockpot #38601 lid basically crumbled and I called Rival hoping to get a replacement, however I was informed that I would have to order a whole new lid quoted at $18.50 plus taxes and also to call back in 6 weeks because of stock shortage. What a waste! I see now that this seems to be a problem with this product and I did not get any satisfactory answer when I questioned them on their quality control.

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2008

Exactly the same problem - the plastic part of the lid holding the metal shank where the screw goes crumbled. Rival only offers a replacement lid - not the handle. I found these replacement handles, but have not tried them> http://buyitnow64.stores.yahoo.net/ricrl...

I have the same problem.  Plastic handle broke off after very little use.  Tried gluing back together, doesn't hold due to heat.

Anyone find a better replacement lid?

  • cooking red Mar 17, 2008

Amazing that this many people are having the same problem. My smart pot handle just broke off also. I have spent hours looking for a replacement. It is very frustrating. Has anyone ordered from the 2 recommended places?

  • Anonymous Mar 17, 2008

The handle on the lid of my oval crock pot (Rival) - same one - broke as well, almost dropped and broke the glass top when it happened. I got it for Christmas, and it should not be breaking that fast. Bad news. I have been searching for a new one... to no avail.

  • Anonymous Mar 17, 2008

the plastic handle broke the screws are still on the cover

rIval 38601 would like to buy a new one.

  • ecory2001 Mar 19, 2008

I just ordered the replacement lid from Goodmans.net. Hope it works!

  • Anonymous Mar 19, 2008

Same problem here. The plastic handle broke. Now I cant find a place where I can get just the knob.

My crock pot is not that old! It is frustrating to realize that it is almost cheaper to purchase a new crockpot for what it would cost me to simply replace the handle. In my opinion the manufacturer needs to upgrade the handle assembly!

    same thing,,, silent recall?

  • cin43 Mar 30, 2008

i have the same problem plastic handle on the lid and also the two side handles the plastic just cracked and broke. used the crock pot about 5 times.

  • Anonymous Apr 04, 2008

Like all the other comments listed here, I used my Rival Crock Pot Smart-Pot 6 quart oval cooker for only a few months before having the lid drop back onto the pot, leaving the handle in my hand.  I was very lucky, I wasn't burned; the lid was only a couple of inches above the pot when it fell off.  And like all the others, I, too, called Rival and was given one option only, buying a new lid.  I have found a site,  http://www.marbeck.com/crock_parts_rival...
which offers a knob replacement that they claim will fit the oval lid.  I have not ordered it yet, but plan to do so.

However, I should think that Rival, if it wants to continue to stay in business, should redesign the handle so that it lasts several years, not several months.  Then it should send the new replacement to everyone who bought a defective one free of charge.

It is just extremely lucky that no one has sued them yet.  In fact, I would not be a bit surprised to read soon that some enterprising lawyer has brought a class action suit against them.

As for me, I will never buy another Rival product again and I will tell everyone I come into contact with, who is considering buying one, not to do so, and tell them of my experience.

  • Anonymous Apr 05, 2008

Exact same problem as Eric - need to replace the handle on the glass lid of the rival crock pot. It broke only after 2 uses. I am always very careful with all of my appliances and feel this is a quality issue at Rival.

The plastic handle on the glass lid of my rival crockpot has broke.
The plastic handle attaches to the glass top via a simple screw.

I'd like to purchase just a new plastic handle, not a new glass lid with plastic handle already attached.

  • Anonymous Apr 12, 2008

The top knob on the lid of the cooker broke off. Since the plastic is all broken there is no way to repair it. I do not want a new lid, just the knob as the screw is there to put it on with. This cooker is only 2 1/2 years old.

  • DaveKn Apr 18, 2008

cheap handle broke off after about a year of use. Can't find any place that sells a replacement.

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2008

Yes, the PLASTIC (huh?) lid handle melted when I put the entire pot + lid in a warming oven - thinking the handle was metal. I have the screw in place.

It is a CROCK (pun intended) to make a very good appliance with such a cheap handle that breaks and/or melts at relatively low temperatures....and then not provide replacement parts. With this type of engineering - how much would it cost to provide a durable handle? Ridiculous short cut. Having no handle almost makes the crock pot unusable. I have to pry the lid up with a spoon or knife and then the steam rushes out at me.

I will jury-rig up something - but Rival ought to pay attention to this defect in their product.

  • Rockjaw Apr 29, 2008

Handle broke off with out any undo pressure.

  • Maddened May 22, 2008

Just now, after only a few months of use, the plastic handle broke away from the lid on my Rival Crock Pot. I knew this must be a common flaw in the product, so I immediately did a search and found all these other people with the same problem. Certainly we must be only the tip of the iceberg of the many people being ripped off by this incredibly poor product design on the part of Rival.

  • Joaniekay May 25, 2008

model number is 5070 for my Rival Crock-pot stoneware slow cooker. The plastic handle broke last night. I would like to get a handle to replace it. I did not find the proper handle in the links suggested.

  • tweetyfdf Jun 07, 2008

With obviously a cheap made in China Broke right off the screw! handle you would think Rival would stand behind their product! Lesson Learned NO MORE RIVAL stay away from CHEAP made in China. Perhaps if we all stop buying this we may get quality products for the money we spend. Could happen if enough people picked up made in China and then put it right back down!!

  • dwuleu Jun 19, 2008

I also need a replacement handle..........just reach in the "handle bag" and sent me one! It's so easy to satisfy your customers. Have you ever heard of good PR? It will sell lots of product!

  • jgrooney Jun 24, 2008

The handle on the cover of my smart-pot also broke. It broke at the screw in point, the pieces just seem to have come appart.

I have looked at replacing the class top but have found that it is very expensive considering that I have had this pot for only about 5 months. The top cost almost 60% of the original/replacement of the pot itself.

From the looks of your web site this is a problem with a lot of people.

  • Anonymous Jul 02, 2008

Ours broke too! It just fell out of my wife's hand when she lifted the lid off our Rival Smart Pot,(oval).

It seems this should be a recall item. What consumer organization presses those issues. It would seem Rival would want to keep us happy and offer to send a replacement handle free!

  • conundrum2k4 Jul 03, 2008

I just called them and they advised there is no recal and that they dont have the knob or the whole cover and I should call back . they also advised it would be covered by the warranty. Great customer Service.

  • Anonymous Jul 06, 2008

Ditto, called them (CrockPot) and they want me to purchase the whole lid, I don;'t need the whole lid. Should be a recall, obviously a design flaw

  • judeaug Jul 06, 2008

My lid also just broke, while I was removing it while it was cooking. Luckily, I wasn't hurt and the top didn't break. Just the handle seemed to slip from the screw. They need to recall this immediately.

  • Anonymous Jul 10, 2008

The plastic handle just broke on my Rival Smart-Pot as well. I have only had it for about 5 months. My previous crock pot (similar model) did the exact same thing. I agree that it is a design flaw and should be recalled.

  • vhwenner Jul 22, 2008

Mine broke off too. My husband says he cannot get the screw off so maybe I could replace it with a door cabinet. Does anyone know what he's doing wrong? It's almost like the screw is stripped.

  • bobberace Jul 24, 2008

  • Anonymous Jul 24, 2008

I too have had the plastic handle break apart on my Rival SCC658 Smart-pot. It does seem like a waste to buy a new lid but I'm worried that just ordering a handle might not work because it won't fit correctly.

The top plastic piece on my crock pot came off in my hand. I dont think the handle can with stand the heat. Looking for replacement lid or a new handle.

  • Belinda Rossiter Aug 19, 2008

Mine's a DHP4903 (oval smart pot), and the plastic handle has disintegrated after only about a year of use. Seeing all these messages I am not impressed. This was my second crockpot and I have never liked it -- it overcooks.

  • Beebus Aug 19, 2008

Well, I'm glad it's not just me. I called the company and they said that a replacement knob was available at Lowes and Home Depot. It's not. The customer service rep also said that there MAY be a recall on this lid, but she didn't know when. With the overcooking issue, I'm thinking another crockpot may be the best way to go on this.

  • JazPrncess Aug 20, 2008

I have the same problem. The plastic handle just fell apart & now I can't get the lid off without making a mess, or burning self. I'm not having any luck in locating a replacement part. Any ideas are appreciated!

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2008

I bought my Oval crockpot back in May the handle fall apart on the 4th use, nearly burning me at the same time. My Husband managed to Glue it back together today I use it again for the first time since and guess what Yes you guess it the handle did the same thing. It seem's to me that the heat from the crockpot is melting the glue used both times, I am at a lose at what to do.

Model 38601 smart pot 6-quart is the model I use.

  • Anonymous Aug 31, 2008

I had the same problem. My son went to lift the lid and it just broke off. The lid is still perfectly good, but you need the handle to lift it.

  • Anonymous Sep 03, 2008

Have the same problem. I made shredded chicken in the pot the very FIRST time I used and upon lifting the lid when ready to serve, the handle crumbled into pieces. I have contacted Rival several times and they put me on a "list" for a new lid. However, that was two months ago and I have phone several times since and keep getting the same ole story.... "The lid is on back order!" YEH, right! This was a faulty problem with this particular lid. So, now I have a crock pot that I don't even use. YEH RIVAL. You have many upset individuals on this product! Keep up the good work!!!

  • childs117 Sep 03, 2008

The small plastic handle broke on my smart pot and the screw came off in the dinner we prepared. I would like to know what to do to replace it.

  • PLStrahan Sep 08, 2008

Me too. I lifted the lid from my Rival Crock Pot and the handle came off in my hand causing the lid to fall and the contents of the Crock Pot to splash on me, burning my hand. I love my Crock Pot but, given that the original handle can no longer be bought, it's obvious that Rival is aware of the problem. I ended up ordering the handle that Rival designed to replace the original.

  • Anonymous Sep 10, 2008

wow...it seems I'm not alone...my handle broke after just a couple uses too.

  • Anonymous Sep 10, 2008

The same thing happened to me. My husband used gorilla glue to put the handle back on but it only worked for a short time. Rival was NO HELP when I called!

  • Anonymous Sep 10, 2008

I have the same exact problem as everyone else. I can say for certain that I WILL NOT be purchasing another Rival Crockpot in the future. Rival has offered no assistance to this matter, despite the frequency of the claims. Seems to be a manufacturer's defect to me that they should rectify if they want to keep their (once) good name!

  • MarthaF Sep 11, 2008

The model I have, the SVC401 White Oval Crock Pot did the same thing. I noticed a few days ago that the rubber ring (gasket) around the screw holding the handle on was cracked and broken. The only problem I could foresee was moisture getting in and causing it to mold. Unfortunately, tonight it came off and cannot be fixed. Luckily for me, I was not injured in any way.

  • Anonymous Sep 13, 2008

My handle also has broken off. This is my Second crock pot lid and have had problems with both. My husband also used gorilla glue on the handle and it lasted for a few months. I will probably just use the lid without a handle and wear a oven mitt to pick it up.

  • Anonymous Sep 14, 2008

I have had the same problem. I have found a replacement part but I hate to pay the amount
+ shipping for a $35.00 crock pot. I will not purchase another one if it has a plastic top!

  • lstephens63 Sep 20, 2008

After the first use, a plastic piece on the hinged lid of our 6-quart Crock Pot broke off. Since then, the other pieces have continued to break, with only the top handle remaining. What a disappointment! Sounds like a recall is in order here. Perhaps the BBB and state Attorney General consumer fraud agencies should be contacted. I always thought Crock Pot was the best. Not anymore. I've had mine a total of 6 months.

  • lstephens63 Sep 20, 2008

Our hinged lid broke off too. I'll try Rival, but if that fails, I'm contacting BBB and state Attorney General Consumer Fraud agencies. Companies need to stand behind their products. The Net is full of complaints about this particular product.

  • Anonymous Oct 13, 2008

  • Anonymous Oct 14, 2008

  • Anonymous Oct 16, 2008

  • coyotebob Oct 19, 2008

Ditto. Picked the lid this morning and only the handle followed. It is infuriating that this has gone on for so long and nothing is done.

  • RWMC Oct 23, 2008

The handle came off my crockpot. Its base crumbled leaving the screw and a bit of the plastic behind. I called Rival several times but without success. The first customer service rep. said that they would send me a new lid and handle at no cost, but they were out of stock. I was to call back in a couple of weeks, which I did. Then the runaround began: not in stock, call back in two weeks, not in stock, not under warranty (3 years old), will sell me a new one at 25% off. I will make one more call, but it seems thay they are stonewalling.

  • tnksns Oct 29, 2008

I picked up the lid of the 6 qt crock pot and it felt loose. Checked to find the this piece is cracked in several places. This unit has been used 3 or 4 times. Wasted much time trying to find a replacement part that apparently does not exist.

This is a safety issue. Please have your design folks design the proper accessory for your product. Or fire them. ?

Wow I too just had this very same problem~!! It happened today!!!

  • Anonymous Nov 03, 2008

The handle to my Smart Pot broke off last week at work after a potluck lunch. The same thing happened to a co-worker. I'm lucky that it broke while I was washing it, so I avoided getting burned. Shame on Rival for not following through on replacing these lids. I went online to see about a replacement part, and was directed to this website. Followed the advice from another post, I called Goodman's Hardware and ordered a replacement handle. They come in a package of two, for $6.91 including shipping and handling. It just arrived today, I changed out the handle and gave the extra one to my co-worker. Thanks for the helpful advice!!

Wow, I had the same problem. Rival would not help me and I only had the pot about 2 months.

  • bob053 Nov 13, 2008

    Mine just broke tonight.
First time using it too damn it.
Was able to pull it off the crock when meal was finished cooking and placed cover on counter. After the meal was finished, went to pick it up so I can wash it and it just snapped off. Shows heat distress for sure. Thankfully this did not happen when pulling it off the hot crock after 10 hours. It could have fell and busted up cutting us AND burning us too.
I'm going to call and raise hell tomorrow and if not shipped a replacement will be filing with the BBB.
I recommend everyone else do as well as this is not only an obvious manufacturing issue pertaining to regular use, but very much so a safety issue.

My lid handle lasted for probably 10 uses, then cracked and has limped along for the last 5-10. It is now completely broken off. Very frustrating Rival!

  • N of Toronto Nov 20, 2008

Same problem in Toronto Canada, broke off after about 10-12 uses. Called their service desk, same response: buy a whole new lid (about $12, shipping extra). BUT they're out of stock on lids right now.

Will try the thrift store angle for knobs, but I agree wholeheartedly:

I have a feeling these lid handles can't take the dishwasher heat. I've been watching mine crack for several weeks now... tonight it is finished. Any replacement handle would also need to be dishwasher safe. I appreciate any suggestions!!

  • Anonymous Jan 04, 2009

i have the exact same problem.

  • spikekaz Jan 15, 2009

Same problem. Handle cracked off under normal use. Called Rival's 800 number 1/15/09, and they told me they don't sell parts for it!

  • Anonymous Jan 29, 2009

I think Rival just ripped us off. I've only had my Smart Pot for 6 months and the handle on the lid already broke!

  • Anonymous Feb 09, 2009

My lid broke too after using twice. When attempting to return the pot back to Costco's in it's original box, the bottom fell out and the ceramic pot broke. I need a replacement for the lid and 6qt ceramic pot.

  • Anonymous Feb 09, 2009

My lid broke after using twice. I was in the process of returning the pot to Costco's in it's original box, when the bottom feel out and the ceramic pot broke into pieces. I now need a lid and a pot relacement. The product certainly have some serious issues.

We just had our second handle on the crockpot lid break off. We were simply lifting the lid off to serve our soup. Last time we ordered a new lid. This is definitely a defective part. I'm disappointed that Rival will not take more responsibility to replace the lid or come up with a better solution.

  • Anonymous Feb 23, 2009

Ridiculous that the handle on the lid lasts for such a short amount of time.. Replacing this is about half the amount of replacing the entire product. I have not located a decent replacement on the market, does anyone have any suggestions? NASCAR season is starting and the crockpot get used A LOT!

  • Anonymous Feb 25, 2009

I too broke the handle off fter minimal use. I will rig up another but I will not buy a rival crockpot again!

  • jenn20 Feb 25, 2009

I have this crock pot from costco - just bought it this weekend.  Question... do you leave the plastic spoon in slot on the top while you cook?  And if you don't - doesn't heat escape through the opening?  I'm so confused by this design!  please help or I'm returning this thing!

need plastic handle on Rival Crockpot lid

  • Anonymous Apr 20, 2009

Easter weekend, the handle came off the lid of my Rival SCVP6009A1 when my husband went to take the lid off to slice the roast for company. Luckily, the lid didn't break and no one got burned. My one-year warranty had just expired about a month before and I've sent Rival an e-mail to ask where I can order a new lid. But do I want another one when it will probably break too? Aren't you folks covered for a free one under your warranty, as most of you have only used it 2 or 3 times?! If my warranty hadn't expired, I would be expecting a replacement lid for free! Seems like a scam to use such crappy handles so you can keep selling thousands of new lids!

  • Anonymous May 03, 2009

Same problem.....both plastic lids broke right away. I cant even find replacement handles on the crock pot site! RIP OFF

  • Anonymous May 18, 2009

Wow, never thought I'd see this many folk with the same problem, mine broke a few months ago, I had only used it twice. I'll try the replacement handle from Lowes suggestion. Paying $6.00 for a replacement lid not worth it, I'm sure it will break again.

    Thanks for the tip

  • Galeen May 11, 2010

Those people suggesting replacing the lid with another from the Goodwill store or using a cabinet knob have a good idea. However, that only works for round pots. My model is a 6 quart oval. The handle has two screws and of course the lid is curved so the cabinet knob would not work unless it was curved for some reason that I can't think of. I live in a small town with one Thrift Shop - not much there. Galeen

I took the lid to the local Ace Hardware store where Russ helped me with a handle (looks like a nob with a screw), washers and nut for under $2! He put it together for me and it looks great!

I have a comment to ibperfect88. You are sadly mistaken. You are definitely not perfect. In fact you are extremely IMPERFECT.

Personally, I was glad to see that I was not the only one who had the handle to my almost new, barely used come right off of my crock pot lid.

You are a sorry excuse for human being.

Just go to any hardware store and buy a lid handle or a cabinet knob (which is what I used) and screw it onto the lid in place of the broken one. I cut the loop off of the old handle, drilled a hole in the center of the remaining "base" and put that piece in between the glass and the new handle. Took all of five minutes and it's better than new. I used a chrome cabinet knob and it looks like OEM!

If you think a broken lid handle is a problem, just imagine having the dirty mind that ibperfect88 has! Now that's a real problem and one that makes a person's life miserable. Pity that poor creature

Would you believe my THIRD replacement pot from Rival Crock-Pot just broke again last night? The black plastic they've been using for the past year or two (or more) is clearly defective. This last replacement pot was sent to me from Rival in May 2009. Supposed to be their latest and greatest. Yes, it was a new 6-quart portable design from the last replacement they sent me.... but the black plastic STILL broke on the lid hinge.

I am contacting them.... but this time I'm demanding a refund... I am done messing around with their defective products. For those of you who want to contact them anyway (they WILL send you a new crockpot even if you don't have a receipt - they will ask you to cut the cord off and mail it to them - which has the serial numbers on them).

The packing slip I received with each new replacement pot has their contact info for consumer affairs. I'm putting it below so you can call or write them.... which I definitely suggest you do. They've got to address this defective black plastic they're using once and for all!!!

If you call Rival at 1-800-323-9519 you can ask them to send you a new lid handle for free. You will need the model number of the crockpot when you call.
That easy!

I had the same problem. After little use, the handle on my Rival Smart Pot snapped off with the screw intact, still attached to the lid. Luckily I was not burned but very easily could have been. You would think Rival would address this issue. It is obvious that others are having the same problem. I followed the advice of others and bought two new ones from goodmans.net. Thanks for the advice!

Handle broke off this morning. Lousy and hazardous construction. The only 2 internet sites selling replacement handles either won't ship to AK/HI or will charge over $25.00 shipping for two bits of cheap plastic. Luckily, I followed the advice of solution #2 and paid less than $4.00 for two wooden handles and a rubber plumbing washer. I was able to use the original screw with the new handle. Fit like a charm. Fixed in less than a minute and saved $$$.

For the oval lid (SCVS600) for less than $2.00, buy two 3/4 " long stainless steel #8-32 round head (Phillips) screws with self-locking nuts. Using a 5/32" drill bit, drill a hole through the handle at each of the two locations in the handle where the original threaded inserts were located (they are probably out since that is where the handle probably broke). (NOTE: Drill the hole in the handle at the same angle that the original screw makes with the handle because of the curvature of the glass, so that the new screw head will still set flush against the glass.) Using the original inside washer from the original screw, re-assemble the handle onto the lid. The 3/4" screw will not extend out past the top of the self-locking nut - it will sit below about 1 - 2 threads - but that's OK. This sould never break again.

One of these messages suggested reporting the problem of the plastic handle breaking off the crock pot glass lid to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Go to their website and fill out the report. It's quick and officially reports the problem. If we all do it, perhaps Rival will be forced to solve the problem of the plastic handles breaking off the crock pot glass lids.

you sound like an angry person, people would not be so angry and hateful if they had God in their lives. These ppl are not whining they are just trying to figure the best way to fix their problem. Just cause it's not a big problem, doesn't mean it shouldn't be resolved. I hope you don't get angry with this, i'm just trying to help. God Bless.

Use a bi-fold door knob. It is wood, larger in diameter and deeper than cabinet knobs. You will have to cut the screw to length or find another screw. Cost is less than $2. Purchase at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

Do not over tighten.

I followed solution #2 and ordered 2 new knobs from Goodman's for $6 buck. They were easy to deal with, and since a co-worker had the exact same problem, I gave her the extra knob. Now, we both have working lids again. Rival should have a recall on this item.

Rival crockpots stink! Don't buy one. Like everyone else, the handle on my Rival crockpot broke after only a few uses. I burned my hand in the process. Thanks for suggesting using a cabinet knob as a replacement. I will try it. Also, the people are right about Goodman's. They don't sell parts. It's just a scam to get you to go to their website

I had the lid handle break the third time i used it; been using it that way every since until i nearly burnt myself recently. I called Jarden (thanks to who posted the contact info) and with little questions asked they told me they were sending me out a complete new lid. He said he'd had many calls on it and he did not really know the problem with it but the solution was so simple. Guess I will see how long the new one lasts. I wonder....do you all put the lid in the dishwasher? I put the lid but not the crock...think I will hand wash the new lid.

Call...let them send you a new one. If they had not done that I would have returned it to Bed Bath and Beyond. I have the box but knew I would need to spend time looking for the receipt. Jarden asked for nothing, not even the purchase date.

I found a box of pot lids in a thrift store with several glass lids in it for $1 each.  There were two with handles that fit my Rival Crock Pot, in fact, one looked just like a lid to a smaller version of mine. So my problem is solved

The fix I'm posting can't change the fact that Rival is a lost company that does not care one iota for its customers once they have your dollar. I hope Rival goes away - they deserve nothing less than to go out of business. But I digress...
To repair a Crock Pot glass lid handle that has broken, you need to very carefully drill out the screw with a 1/4" bit. You can use any standard bit for this, as the screw is a very soft metal - perhaps aluminum.
Place the lid bottom-up on a towel to keep it from moving. You do not want to put too much downward force when drilling or drill at an angle - you will break the glass. Once the screw is drilled out, the remains of the plastic handle should separate from the lid, leaving you with the hole remaining.
I bought an off-the-shelf drawer pull knob and a couple of 3/16" rubber washers to keep the lid from being compressed by the metal drawer pull bolt. It might be necessary to purchase a shorter version of the bolt that comes with your drawer pull knob as they are meant to mount to much thicker cabinet doors and not thin glass lids! I recommend a 1/2" long bolt, based upon the lid that came with my model sccpvp700-s.
Tools required:
Drill1/4" Drill BitDrawer Pull Knob (any style you like - metal ones may conduct heat though!)8/32" x 1/2" Drawer Front Screw (shorter than the one that will come with the above knob.)3/16" Rubber Washers
Project Time: 45 Minutes (20 on phone with Rival; 10 in hardware store; 15 for project itself)

The fix I'm posting can't change the fact that Rival is a lost company that does not care one iota for its customers once they have your dollar. I hope Rival goes away - they deserve nothing less than to go out of business. But I digress...

My lid also broke after only a few uses. My husband fixed the lid by attaching an old knob and it works fine.Lucky I didnt get burnt though because when it broke it was hot. If that was the only problem it would be fixable but now the "Smart" computer part of the crockpot no longer works and it is not that old. I think the whole thing should be recalled.

I have this exact same problem. BOTH lids eventually broke and within 1 year. I paid full price and this machine costs about 50 dollars full retail. First the hinge plastic broke. Then the black lid lifting piece. I'm really disappointed in the quality of the product and the replacement policy from the crockpot company. I have my customer service ticket in but as i don't have the original receipt, although it's less than one year, I doubt they will do the right thing and stand by their product. I will likely buy another brand after some careful research and reading of the consumer rating websites.
My official solution is to buy another brand. It will last you longer. You can replace your lid if you like but it's already proven to be poorly made. It's better to just support a company that stands by their product. Not one that profits from replacement sales when they know they are selling a low quality item.

I called 1-800-323-9519 hoping to get a free handle replacement. Turns out they are sending me a new unit as mine is still under warranty and they have had problems with my model number.

I had same issue, only mine was cracked in our move, back in 2007. It finally broke off after using it last week. I too only want the handle, but haven't been able to find it. Found the whole lid replacement at Rival Crock Pot's website for $10. Not bad, but I was floored when shipping was $8-something. Did either of you have any success?

You can obtain a new lid for six pounds by calling Jardin, the parent company of Rival Crockpot. Their number is 01753 251 858.

I have had this crockpot for a few years and my lid also came off early with normal use. The heat and steam seem to force the handle off and after having put a better screw in it, the handle has now cracked and I need a replacement. I found a web site with a different looking handle, probably better. I am going to try it since it is only $5.99 for two knobs. I too am disappointed with this product, aren't they supposed to be the experts in crockpots?http://www.marbeck.com/crock_parts_rival.html

Mighty Mend-it (As Seen on TV) or any heat resistant epoxy putty allowed to cure overnight will fix it like it's brand new.

  • IamThatGuy Oct 29, 2010

You might want to look into heat activated fumes released into the cooker by the epoxy. Now I'm not a hypochondriac about stuff like this normally, but I work with epoxy a lot and am familiar with mighty mend it. The concern would be from residual fumes released from the epoxy as it heats then cools that gets trapped in the cooker (with your food). The epoxy will work as advertised as it is heat resistant, but once again, the **** its releasing into the pot over time poses a health concern and tastes like **** (don't ask me how I know).

My Rival 6 QT crockpot lid hinge broke for the third time. Rival said they replaced the unit twice already and therefore they had fullfilled their warrenty responsibilty! They said I must ship this unit back to them at my expense and they will replace it with newer model.

Since this obviously an issure that they are failing to address, my solution is to buy a new one and return my broken one in that box with that receipt. Maybe the store will have better luck.

  • jojomama101 Sep 13, 2010

I thought I was alone on the broken handles, I used it about 3 times I burnt my hand trying to open it. I really liked the concept of being able to lift the lid. I will try to put a knob on it, thanks for the tip.

I too had the handle on my Smart Pot break after using it only 3 times! I went to Lowes and bought a very nice wooden drawer pull that is made for a curved-front drawer. It came with a screw slightly smaller than the original but after putting a heat resistant rubber washer on both sides of the lid, it works perfectly. Not exactly beautiful, but it works and it doesn't get hot.

The separation of the handle from the Crock-Pot lid is an obvious product safety issue (I was slightly burned when the lid separated from the handle on my Crock-Pot yesterday) involving materials, design or both. I would be cautious about applying a "home made" fix - if you do have an injury as a result, you would have no recourse. There's enough "frivolous" problems out there that normally I'd just jury-rig a fix (some high temp automotive adhesive to stick it back together) but, when a company chooses to ignore an obvious safety problem that's due to defective design or materials, that's simple to identify and is basically a no-brainer to fix, I'll continue to hound them until they do fix it (and hope no one is substantially injured while the company is farting around.)

Not sure if I agree with your jerry rigging thought of using a high-temp automotive adhesive...I'd be concerned of the possibility of sweat-back into the pot contaminating the food, Patti. But I do agree with not touching the product (trying to fix it yourself). If it ever went to court, Rival could use this as the consumer tampered with the product, so it isn't their fault, only I for one wouldn't go this course, I just won't buy their product again. After all, choosing what to spend our money on and where to purchase it from are our (the USA consumer's) way of making a statement.

The best solution is to purchase replacement pot knobs from www.goodmans.net Item FZ-581. You get 2 knobs for $3.99 and $2.92 S & H for a total of $6.91. Their toll free # is 1-888-333-4660

My daughter had same problem. It is a bad design. She complained to Rival and got a new crock pot. Everyone should complain and maybe they will make a better product!!

  • gimpy219 Jul 15, 2011

I just did the same thing... I would have been perfectly happy with a new lid, but they said they no longer made that model, so would just send me a brand new one... SWEET! ...Thanks Crock Pot (lets hope the engineering is better on this new model, otherwise I'll call again :) ...)

SOURCE: Need plastic handle on Rival Crockpot lid.

For what it's worth, when the handle on my mother-in-law's crockpot broke, I went to Home Depot and bought a cheap wooden drawer knob (about $1 as I recall). I put a plastic washer between the knob and the glass and another under the screw head from the bottom (to prevent cracking the lid), tightened the screw and good as new.

SOURCE: Need plastic handle on Rival Crockpot lid.

I looked this model up on the Rival website, and it had been recalled, so I have followed the directions to send in the plug for a new unit. According to others with similar issues, once they sent in the plug, they were sent an entire new crock pot, including the crock and lid. I am hoping that they do send me an entire new unit, however, if not, at least I will have a different model number and could order a lid for that model. I will never buy another Rival product, based on their poor customer service. Thanks for your help!!

Need plastic handle on Rival Crockpot lid.

Need plastic handle on Rival Crockpot lid.

I am Jo Anne Gomez who posted original problem and thought the problem was resolved with husband putting on a knob he found at the hardware store. Just wanted to let you all know that the handle we thought would solve the problem DID NOT....after he replaced the knob and we did another roast in it the lid totally shattered after we'd cooked another roast (luckily the glass did not get into the food), however, this is just a BAD PROBLEM and these lids should ALL be recalled. I have seen, just recently, the exact same crock pot and lid being sold for much less. I think that these crock pots should not even be sold but taken off the market to prevent lawsuits or horrible problems. Just wanted to let you know our solution did not work and Rival was not helpful at all.
