No way to bypass except to format the drive, which will wipe the data clean.

Hello sir, let me give you some tips, you can dismantle it and get the HDD unit, buy a cheap external SATA usb hdd enclosure with USB 2.0 . Well all of them are 2.0 compatible (the unit without the HDD) and put it there. you can always keep the old one for posterity. hope this helps.

I have a 60 GB simpletech external hard drive. I

Try to hook it up to another computer and see if it works there. This will tell you if the device is failing. If you have found that it failed please see about replacing the power adapter. If still no live the device has failed and needs replacement.

SimpleTech 80 GB Portable HD Won't Read

It sounds like a problem with the board inside the case,- the actual hard drive is probably OK. Opening the case will void any warranty but there may not be much left anyway. There should be 4 screws in the bottom of the drive,- front 2 may be hidden under a sticker. Try installing the drive in your new case or an empty drive bay inside your computer. I have had external hard drive cases fail before and the actual hard drive was ok.

SimpleTech 320GB Not Found by PC

Very simple solution. Your external storage cabinet for the drive is junk. I opened mine up and its just fitting loosely in it. You will void your warranty if you do - but who cares, the cost to send it in for an RMA is equal to the cost for a 2.5" SATA enclosure. When you open it up, the SATA and Power connector is not all the way in - push it in and then tape it so it holds together. Plug it in and you should be fine. Fixed two of them that way.

Purchased about two months ago. the external drive turns constatly making a grindin sound.

You need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.
