Sounds like perhaps the splines on the torque converter output shaft may have failed, there was a recall on some of those for that very issue. Here is a news article about the issue:

2004 freestar when in D is acting like it is in neutral. Same result when shifted into R. After setting overnight, freestar drives perfectly. What could cause this intermittent problem?

Open the hood and look to your left,to the rear at the top of the firewall you will see a large harness going to a computer module.Disconnect the large harness an look for any corrosion, remove corrosion and reinstall the harness and waterproof this connection as Ford did not do a good job waterproofing this area.
Hopefully this will cure the problem you are having as it has for others.

My 2004 freestar wont start battery good it used to start if i shifted it into neutral but now wont start in any gear

It should start in park and neutral .Their are safety switches to provident it from starting in gear. Like a clutch switch on a standard so you don't drive through your garage door .
The part is called an interlock switch typically mounted on the drivers side of the transmission. Also depending on if it is cable or electronic operated .Also could be the switch in the muilty function switches that control the shifting at the steering column

2000 ford focus, manual, the stick stick flops around not engaged

There are three posibilities for this worn linkage on the gearbox the linkage under gear lever or a broken mounting on the bracket where the lever comes up through the floor as long as you can get all gears it will be exturnal linkage fault.

I can shift into drive but it won't engage

sounds like a broken shift cable. (the connection between the shifter and the gearbox) common symptoms are the shifter move easier than normal.and does not move to any gears (not even park or neutral).

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.
