The best way to identify a tractor is by the serial number. Serial numbers on the 9N-2N and 8N tractors are located on the left side of the engine block, just below the head and behind the oil filter. IDENTIFICATIONhttp://www.just8ns.com/Identifying-Your-Ford-Tractor.html
Hi, Try restoration supply tractor parts. It may be a good place to start. Down the left hand column you will see Serial # look up. This will identify the year it was built. This might help you determine it's origin, and then where it was first sold. There is also a sight called "TractorData.com" with serial numbers and modells.
Hope this helps
You will have to get that from Simplicity, but having the model # does allow you to identify and buy parts. For example here: http://www.superxpower.net/pages/OemParts?aribrand=AYP#%2fSimplicity%2f1691135_-_917H%2c_17HP_Hydro_and_48%22_Mower_Deck%2f48%22_Mower_-_Cover%2c_Drive_%26_Bail_Group%2f12063%2f18874
Briggs & Stratton Engine Identifier
The Model, Type and Code numbers, stamped directly into the engine, are used to identify our engines. Engines used in lawn mower applications usually have the model numbers stamped directly into the blower housing, muffler heat shield, or a few inches above the spark plug.
lift your seat and look at the label that you got your model number from. to the right of the model number is the serial number. the first six digits of the serial number is the date your tractor was made - for example: serial no. 060802D002756 would make the unit made June 8, 2002
