Hey, i have nearly the same problem and now finally found a solution to it. In my case half of the screen was empty and the other worked correctly AND slight pressure to the frame surrounding the display on the side of the defect half and/or above the display makes the display reappearing again. Because it's annoying if you always have to press with one hand on your calculator while working with it i did the following: Important: Make sure that... ... you have a backup of the data stored on your TI because you could lose them during the following procedure. ... we are really talking about the same problem. ... this hints come without any warranty and you might destroy your calculator completely following this advice. 1. Open your TI 89 as described for example in [1] 2. Take a piece of foam rubber and cut out a stripe with a shape like |_ or "L", about 1cm in width which fits approximately the frame around the display on the the defect side and the top. 3. Place the foam rubber on the silver shield you see after opening the back of your TI. 4. Then you can assemble your calculator again. I hope i could help you! Hold the Left, Right and 2nd buttons. Then press the On button.
This will erase all user programs but it seems to leave flash apps alone.

What do you want to do with it? If you want just to enter it, you do so on the command line.
Here are exemples of solutions
Under [Mode][F2] exact/aprox set to exact
solve(x^2+x-5=0,x) finds the exact solutions the top ones
Under [MODE][F2] Exact/Aprox set to Approximate you get approximate numerical solutions, the bottom ones.
There is another command nSolve( which solves numerically for an equation. You can specify a range of values where solution is suspected to be.

I assume you are speaking of solving a system of equations with a number of unknowns. If not, please correct me. Here's an example in practice:
If you have a system of 3 equations with 3 unknowns, you would set up your matrix so that the coefficients of each variable for a particular equation are on one row. So, given equations x + y + z = 0, 2x + 3y - 4z = 1, x + -z = -1 you would type the following into your calculator: [[1,1,1,0][2,3,-4,1][1,0,-1,-1]] and press enter to make sure you typed it correctly. notice that in the third row there is a zero, since we have zero time y for the third equation. Then row-reduce the matrix (2nd > 5 > 4 > 4 or in the CATALOG as rref). You should get out the matrix [[1,0,0,-1][0,1,0,1][0,0,1,0]]. This says that x=-1 y = 1 z=0 since my first column contained the coefficients for the x variable, the second for the y variable, and the third for the z variable. The last column contains the solution, the part on the other side of the equals sign.

The wrong terminology is playing tricks on you.
Exemple: What is the antilog ( that is the name, not inverse log) of 0.345?
Answer; antilog of 0.345 = 10^(0.345) =2.21309471
Look at the last two commands on the screen capture.

Warning!!! If you do this procedure make sure that your computer and, calculator are connect. Use Ti Connect software and, make sure you can install the OS on the calculator without any interruption. At any time even at the very beginning of this process, if your computer or, calculator gets interrupted or you have a power failure during the installation of the OS, your calculator will be destroyed. So not attempt this procedure during a thunder storm.
You can use the Ti OS Downloader but, you will have no idea what OS is stored by the Ti OS Downloader. So, I suggest following my instructions and, installing the newest Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v.
Procedure to installing the newest Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v.
You can also get the latest copy of Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v by going to the Texas Instruments web site. You can get to that site instantly by clicking, "Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v." Once your at the Ti site click the Download Item, Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v. Next you can login or, click "continue as guest". I'd would click the "continue as guest". Once you have click, "continue as guest" the Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v. will download to you. Click, "SAVE". And then a folder will pop up. It is probably a folder that you download too. If so, you may want to change it and, "Save as" to this folder, "My Documents \ My TI Data \ Downloads". You can also go back and, download the Ti 89 Titanium guidebook too, if needed.
Link your computer and calculator with the USB cable or, Direct Black Link cable that came with the calculator.
Remove one of the AAA batteries. Press and hold the [APPS] key, and while holding the [APPS] key, replace the battery and turn the unit on. On the older TI-89 you should see "Press I to install code...", and you should press the [9] key to continue. But, on your Ti 89 titanium it should say, "Waiting to receive..." or, "Waiting to received OS...". Now you need to follow the instructions in the paragraph below to restore the calculator's operating system.
Next, drag the Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.10v. that you copied earlier to "My Documents \ My TI Data \ Downloads" out of that folder and, drop it in the "Ti Connect" icon on the desktop. Next the OS Downloader Warning will pop-up. Click, "OK" to continue and, the new OS will begin to install. The Ti Device window should pop up and, click on to the port where your Ti 89 Titanium is located, USB1 cable or Direct Black COM1. Just click, "Select" and, the OS will continue to download. Upon completion the newest Ti 89 Titanium OS 3.01v. will be installed.
