ICEMAKER FROSTING UP

I have a ESS23XGSBB Ge Eterna series 2 years old. Ice maker is always frosted over to where cubed ice is crushed. I have emptied the ice tray and cleaned it out along with the ice shoot. Next day it is frosted over again

Try to take some ice from the dispenser. Remove the glass and open the freezer door to look down inside the dispenser chute and see if the trap door has re-closed. If it remains open warm, humid air will enter the ice bucket and gradually freeze the cubes together. Trap door remaining open is generally caused by a rusted electrical coil which pulls the door open electrically then sticks, unable to re-close. Coil is located behind the panel that operates the dispenser. Relatively easily accessible.

SOURCE: THE ICE CUBE DISPENSER 0NLY SHOOTS CRUSHED ICE

yes and no ...... there is no real adjustment for it but you may have a sticking solenoid .....OK in the back of the unit remove the hopper and you will see the solenoid loop (white Plastic) in the back wall this need to pull up in order for the unit to dispense cubes. it maybe sticking ....now by moving it up and down a few times with your hand to make sure it is free....next dump all the ice out of the hopper and check the arm thathat sticks out the back of the hopper make sure it is not frozen after that reassby and place a few cubes back in the hopper to see if it is working..Let me know

SOURCE: ice dispenser in door clogged up or frozen

I would contact Hotpoint direct for this one. It sounds like a design fault to me.

What I think may be going on is that the cubes are melting too much, then refreezing lower down.

Set your freezer to -18, and the fridge to +2 and see if that changes things any.

Check seals in that area. Where is the moisture coming from to generate the frosting? - Is the location high in humidity?

SOURCE: icemaker only dispenses crushed ice, not cubes

yea! I have been without cubes for 2 years. I slid out the tray, found the lever in the back where the rod went in, pulled it down, reinserted the ice tray, and IT WORKED! At first I thought I broke the lever, because I had to hold it down with a knife while I was inserting the tray, but it just must have been stuck. I am soooo happy!

SOURCE: Ice maker only makes cubes. It will not make crushed ice.

Hi

Kindly check it could be because of following reasons :

  • Freezer may not be cold enough.
Temperature must be 5 degrees (Fahrenheit) or colder to work properly.
  • Normal ice making capacity.
The ice maker will produce between 2.5 to 4.0 pounds of ice a day depending on your model. Side-by-side models come with a large ice bucket and it may take up to three days to fill this container.
  • Water supply valve may not be completely open.
    Open valve completely.
  • Water supply valve may be blocked by foreign material or may not be large enough.
Supply valve must have a 1/4" opening for water to fully supply ice maker. Many self-piercing valves do not have this big of an opening. Replace water supply valve with one that has a 1/4" opening.
  • Water filter may need changing.
If equipped with a water filter, replace filter canister or cartridge.
Please feel free to contact for further assistance

    Thanks

SOURCE: Dispenses crushed ice and will not dispense ice cubes

You have a solenoid switch which switches the dispenser back and forth from crushed to cube. It could be stuck or not working or the parts connecting it could be disconnected or broken. You will have to observe to see if any parts are moving and if any noise is coming from the solenoid

Ice Maker Issues-only crushed ice works, cubed comes out crushed

There is a solinoid in the freezer section by the motor that turns the ice auger. Test it by selecting cubes and with the ice bucket out, open the door, hold the door switch so the lights turn out and push the dispenser button. It should make a loud snap and travel upward. If not then I would say you have a bad solinoid. If it does, then I would look at the bucket. the metal rod that runs along the side of the bucket opens a flap in the bucket that is supposed to let the full cubes drop. look for anything that might cause it to be hanging up.

Icemaker only dispenses crushed ice even when in cube position. Water/light work fine. Have already replaced control module circuit board.

Icemaker seems to partially melt ice while it is being stored

The number one cause of this is the door is not sealing correctly. Check that the door closes and seals as it should.

I own a GE side by side refrigerator Model GSS22KGPD WW, Serial AG225890. This the third frig of the same model with the same identical problem. The ice cube dispenser on the door only gives crushed ice...

    •  if the cubes that the icemaker makes are full size then... the water valve on the back of the machine is usually the culprit in these cases. it will not close fast enough resulting in a little overflow of water into the auger assembly every time it makes ice. it only takes a little bit of water to settle in the bottom of the pan to cause problems.
    • if the cubes are smaller than what you would expect then the water is leaking out right before it reaches the icemaker. either from the plastic tube behind the icemaker or the cup on the icemaker that funnels the water into the icemaker.
    • it also could be the timer inside the icemaker leaving the water valve on too long.
    • all these things can be tested on site. the service person must not be very well trained.
if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

    Icemaker just stopped making ice

As these ice makers cycle there is an arm that moves up while the ice is being freed from the ice maker. After the ice is dumped into the dispenser bin the arm continues a downward motion. If it encounters ice in the downward travel it shuts the ice maker off. If this arm is locked in the full up position the ice maker is manually shut off. Check this arm and make sure it is not locked in the up position.
