Not if the thermostat is controlling the room temperature to its setpoint. Emergency heat is for when the heatpump is in defrost or doesn't work and you need backup heat.

When em heat is on my outside unit runs but when not on em heat it doesn't. Which setting is best to use?

Has this always been this way? When the emergency heat is on the outside unit shouldn't run. When in normal heat, no emergency heat, the outside unit should be running unless the temperature is below the balance point ( usually around 35 degrees). If this has always been this way and the outside temperature is above 40 degrees you might have your 1st stage and 2nd stage wires switched.

How to i clean burners i cant get unit to heat

Hello. Remove the burners, wrap them in ammonia soaked layers of newspaper and slide the whole thing into a large plastic bag which you close with a twist tie. Next day rinse em off, remove any loose debris, let em air dry and..... enjoy your clean grill burners. Joe

I have a Rheem A/C Heat Pump split with gas backup. The gas unit is mounted in the air flow directly before the A/C HP coil. Should the gas unit be wired as stage two heat, or is it OK to wire it as just...

Stage 2 is okay as long as there is a fossil-fuel kit accessory wired in the field control wiring. EM heat would only allow gas furnace operation if the thermostat is set for EMER HT mode.......this is not ideal and not recommended. Dual-Fuel applications require a fossil fuel kit.
I'm including a link with information on one type of fossil fuel kit. It explains how it works. If you have limited HVAC service knowledge and/or experience, I recommend having an experienced service technician check your system operation in all modes to ensure proper operation for longer system life at peak operating efficiency.

yes go into electric heat for awhile. sometimes a heatpump will run constantlly when temps outside are not high enough./em heat mode untill temps rise or unit recovers.your unit should of gone into hot-gas defrost this maybe what your hearing. but remember electric heat is expensive to operate go back to your heatpump mode after system has a chance to recover.

Do you heat with Gas? typically unless you are dual fuel the em heat is electric heat and you may be smelling dust burning off the coils. if its gas then turn it off and immediatly call your gas provider or fire dept, If you dont know then i would get a qualified service company out to look at and explain the operation, as to make sure its working properly and effiently as possible
