Ipod not recognized by computer or itunes

When I plug my ipod into my computer, it doesn't show up anywhere. Neither in "My Computer" or itunes. I'm running Windows XP Professional. I've tried resetting and forcing it to disk mode, reinstalling itunes, changed USB ports, and all the other possible solutions offered by the help web site. It was suggested that I take it to an Apple store for repair. It still plays music and videos that are downloaded on it, it just won't sync up with itunes.I have more music and videos that I wish to install on it.

I have a similar problem- only my ipod won't turn on at all. I've tried resetting it (toggling the hold and holding down menu and select for 10 seconds) but that didn't do anything. I have the newest version of iTunes, but it won't find the ipod. My Computer won't recognize the ipod either. I've tried plugging it into another computer... same results. Thanks for your help.

I have an 80GB iPod video and windows XP. I have had the iPod for a few months and it was working fine, untill a few days ago when all of a sudden it was no longer recognized by my computer. I plug it into the USB port on the front of my computer and a note pops up saying that "USB Device Not Recognized". I can no longer even charge my iPod from the computer (*i must plug into my speakers to charge). Also, I recently started having the same troubles with my printer. This is all very distressing and confusing because, i have a Verizon Wireless cell phone that i can still plug into the same port and download music to. Can someone please help me!!

Same thing with me....and now I have two iPod Nanos with the same problem. One was recognized long after the other, but now the second one is not showing up either. I have tried resetting, re-downloading, reinstalling, using different cables, all that stuff they recommend, except reformatting (which, of course, I cannot do because neither iPod is recognized!) They still play whatever is still in there (I use for books) but I need to get new data in there.....

I struggled with this issue for a while and finally found a post that helped me. Hold menu and the center buttons until the iPod turns off. Then, immediately hold the left and center buttons to pull up the iPod diagnostic menu. Scroll down to the option "Reset" and select it. My iPod was finally recognized by iTunes. Good luck :)

I had this problem with my shuffle and had it with my 7G 3rd generation nano. It does appear to be a usb problem, as suggested. i fixed it both time by go to the Device Manager (right click on my computer - properties - hardware - device manager). If your ipod is connected, you will see the apple ipod DRIVER even when you don't see the ipod in my computer or in itunes. Right click on the Apple ipod driver and uninstall it. Then your pc will automatically reinstall the driver because your device is still connected. After that reinstall happens, you should your ipod in itunes. I hope it works for some!!! I think it's almost always a usb problem. My error happens whenever I plug in my ipod when other usb devices are connected. To be safe now, I have to remove all other usb devices before plugging in my ipod.

This Software reviews is about alternative software applications (besides iTunes) to manage iPod/iPhone/iPad contents. It includes the transferring of music, photos, videos, SMS, Contact ect. between iPod/iPhone/iPad and computer(PC or Mac).

My ipod was getting a USB error "unknown device", and iTunes wouldn't recognize it at all.
Read somewhere that it may be an issue with USB 2.0 vs 1.0, and a USB controller called 'Enhanced Host'.

I opened Device Manager, then the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Someone suggest uninstalling all of them and restarting, then have windows reinstall all of them.
Instead I just uninstalled the USB controller called 'Enhanced Host'. Right away windows tried reinstalling it. Then I opened iTunes and plugged my iPod in. Both Windows and iTunes recognized it right away.

I don't know why, and I don't know how, but that finally worked for me when nothing else did.

I had the same problem with my nano (gen3). I have a work computer (no admin rights) so it was even more frustrating as I couldn't re-load itunes or drivers etc.

When I had this problem a month ago this worked...
I deleted ALL USB divers then scanned for hardware plus re-boot. Basic reset (select +menu on the nano) and then via the diagnostic menu. A combination of all of these seemed to work,

This time around it didn't work I wasted another 2-3 hours trying this all again and itunes still telling me to restore my ipod. arggghh.

When i used the new cable that came with my sexy new orange nano I tried it with my old nano and that fixed it straight away. Strange.

So this what I have worked out from reading many sites to fix 99% of issues:

- Change USB cable
- Re-set your ipod (menu+ select 10 secs)
- Re-set through diagnostic menu (menu+ select then select+rewind)
- Delete all USB connections (control panel> system> hardware> device manager> Universal serial bus contollers)
- update your itunes (if you have admin rights to)

Hope this works, it can drive you mental.

    Update:

I still have that problem but have found a sure fire way to get around this:

Connect your ipod and USB to you computer as you boot up; this makes sure the hardware is recognised and the itunes works fine!

    Try it, it works!

I read somwwhere that it is a USB conflict. Apparently you can unplug other usb devices presently hooked up to your computer and when you unplug the correct one your computer will recognize the ipod. I have not tried the fix yet . I think I need to recharge my ipod battery first and see if that cures the problem. Hope the usb conflict thing works for you.

All,

I had this problem with a brand new 5th generation Ipod Nano I bought my son for Christmas. I am running Windows 7 professional and only had this problem with the new nano. The second ad thrird generation Nanos my wife and I have worked fine. The solution above worked. I plugged in the nano and immediately heard the windows sounds for device identified (however, the ipod did not show up in explorer or anywhere else in any configuration or identity. The only place I could find any recognition of the device was in the USB port portion of the device manager. After a few seconds, the IPOD/apple mobile device driver would appear (a few seconds afetr the sound and the nano being plugged in). I immediately uninstalled the driver. About thirty seconds later the windows sounds sounded again, the driver reinstalled, and I got a small notification that my ipod had been recognized. I then opened itunes 9 and finally it recognized the nano. Hope this works for you.

This has apparently occured with MANY people who have bought the 3rd Gen Nano. Either a) the computer is shut off wit th enano still attached, or b) the nano is removed prematurely, without hittnig "Eject" first. Try loading an earlier version of iTunes (7.4.3) from www.filehippo.com. This also seems to be a PC-exclusive issue.

So you can's download anything to your ipod or snyc it..well to find out if your having this problem, basically you go to itunes and run the test to see, if any of the bullets appear red then you might have this problem.
In some rare instances, it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes.
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:

  1. iTunes
  2. QuickTime
  3. Apple Software Update
  4. Apple Mobile Device Support
  5. Bonjour
  6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
important: You may see various alert messages if you uninstall these applications in a different order or only uninstall certain components.

I had the same, exact problem. I downloaded iTunes again and told it to repair damaged files - I was prompted to ask for this. I did and it took care of the problem. I guess it basically redownloads iTunes without erasing your library.

I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM ON MY IPOD AS WELL. (skip down to next all caps for solution)
I fixed it by changing an options setting on one of the apps in my ipod touch. I had this app called "air music" and one of the options for it on the drive app said connect to itunes or drive only and i had it on drive only instead of itunes....anyways i was really ****** off for like 2 months cuz my ipod wasnt connecting to itunes and i couldnt sink new songs. I promised God that if I ever found out what was wrong with it I would post it and help someone out in the world whose having the same problem...
Anyways, my advice to anyone with this problem is...CHECK ALL YOUR APPS AND SEE IF U ACCIDENTALLY CHANGED YOUR SETTINGS ON ONE OF THEM, theres a good chance this is your problem. Post this somewhere else if this was your problem.

I had the same problem with my 2G shuffle not being recognized by computer until I tried this. If I connect my usb cable to my ipod and then turn on the ipod BEFORE connecting the cable to the computer, it will recognize it after about 5 seconds.

Another solution may be to just change which usb port you use, on my pc the the two in the front weren't allowing the ipod shuffle to be recognized as hardware or in itunes, after making up new curse words and vowing the most horrific of bloody vegngences through my victimized perspective it was intuited to me to switch the ports, plug in the ipod usb wire to a port in the back , and low and behold more low then behold it worked like a charm, i didn't have this problem until i allowed windows to do an update and restart my computer to install them, i left the next day with the ipod and worked fine, i came back to plug in for recharge and there was no recognition. that update automatic restart(when the ipod was plugged in) may have been the problem.
all self absorbed rambling aside, the point is
if you have the itunes update already
try all the different usb ports until you get a response, these issues usually happen after some windows/microsoft update

If the ipod works on other pc's then and windows just can't find the right software, i found that the windows/inf/infcache.1 file was corrupt and just delete it. everything worked great after that. i bet this fixes alot of people usb problems.

I have a brand nw apple nano says made in California. I tried connecting it to my pc. I also hace an 80g classic. Wanted to syncronize the new 16g. But, it works as an mp3. Apple program did not recognize it. Tried to synch with microsoft media player. Started to recognize or so it seemed. At 70% (was very slow) both computer and ipod shut down. Now ipod does not turn on at all. Can anyone tell me how to fix?

I had the same problem. The problem ended up being with Itunes not working right. The solution I found was to download the program winamp and download the plugin for apple ipod. Then you can sync and add software thru winamp. After syncing one time it even worked with itunes but I like winamp better, so I synch all music using winamp.

For it to recongnize, maybe try:
1: go to control panel
2:add hardware
3:connect your hardware device and click "yes i have connected the hardware"
4:scroll down and select install new hardware device
5:select install hardware that i manually select from a list
6:scroll down to windows portable devices
7:and choose MTP device
this should make it so your ipod is now recognised by the computer

Maybe you should try this third ipod manager tool - Daniusoft iPod transfer:

Key-features:
1. Sync videos/songs from computer to iPod without iTunes ;
2. Backup videos/songs off iPod to computer smoothly ;
3. Transfer iPod video/music to iTunes .

I always use it to sync my iPod when my iTunes can't recognize my iPod, it's easy to use and works pretty well.

I have an apple Nano(2G). Running software 3.1.1 Itunes is 8.1. When I plug it in yy computer and device manager recognizes the device but itunes does not recognize the IPOD when i plug it in.

Here is a trick I have tried and it worked.
in My Computer Right Click your Ipod device and explore the memory.
in the device software choose a file and right click and open with iTunes.
if your itunes is running it should try and open in itunes.

If it doesn;t work,
Try another USB port preferrably a USB 2.0 port.
Good Luck

My Computer and iTunes does not recognize my iPod

I think what needs to happen is you need to restore.

Hold down the sleep and home buttons until you see the apple logo. As soon as that comes up, let go of the sleep button, but keep the home button held down.

A little picture saying you need to plug your iPod in iTunes should appear after a couple seconds. Let go of home and plug your iPod into the computer now.

When iTunes says you need to restore, do so. It will take some time to restore the iPod after you have given iTunes the command to do so.

Get a snack, and a drink... You might be here for a little while.
