Working on a Denon DVD-3910. Need to replace the DVD mechanism (FG180-1). I've found a few versions; FG180-1W, FG180-1-DE, FG180-1-DE-W. Will any work? are any better than others?

I had the same problems with my four year Denon DVD-3910 and the only solution to it was to replace the laser unit with a new one.
There are some repair service on EBay that offer new laser units for only about 50 € and are also willing to change the laser unit for an extra charge of just 30 €.
After this replacement your Denon DVD-3910 will work fine again.
Have there been any changes to the systems configuration? Has there been an electrical outage or lightning strike in your area? If the answer to these are no then check the video connection to the tv ensuring both ends are secure in their ports.Ensure the tv is on the right input source for the type you are using. I know this may all seem trivial but sometimes the obvious is the easiest solution. I am assuming you have audio but no video. If you are still unable to make a picture on that tv try another one to isolate the fac t that it is the dvd player itself that is faulty.
You can try this reset method, if it doesn't work it will probably need service by a professional. Remeber that all setting will be lost, make sure you know them so you can put them back in after you are finished.
At the player stop condition, press 3 buttons for DVD operation (“PLAY”,”OPEN/CLOSE”, and “ SKIP”) until “INITIALIZE” appears and disappears in the display. (“Initialized” appears and disappears on the TV screen.) ******All user setting will be lost and its factory setting will be restored when this initialization is made. Be sure to memorize your setting for restoring again after the initialization
I have the Denon 2900 (about 4 years of use) and until recently, suffered from the same (growing) problem. CD's were very difficult to start/read. I recently found advice which I tried and was succesful with. It was manually cleaning the laserlens. I took away the outer housing by unscrewing all off the on top (6), side (4) and the back (2) bolts. After that I took out the top plate of the laserunit which took two very little screws taking out. Now you are looking at the cd-tray with the lens. Take a very soft and clean cloth and moisten it a little bit with clean water (be very carefull with the moistening, don't allow any waterdrop to come out of the cloth into the laserlens while cleaning! Carefully clean the lens and dry it with a dry part of the same cloth. Replace the top plate and the outer housing and the player will recognize the discs like it's new again. Good luck! Thats how some manufacturers sell there replacement parts as they come into the country assembled. it cost let to import but more for us. i once needed a spindle motor for a unit, no replacement except the manufacturer part. Had to buy entire laser assy and thats what they bare selling you too. If you already tryed to manualy clean the lens, look on the side of the laser pick-up. it might be made by sony or a popular manufacturer go by the number printed on the label on the side or bottom of the laser assy unit itself. Good Luck
