After 2 years I finnaly solved the problem. There was a flaw in the
lamp´s temperature circuit. A technician disassambled my BENQ PB8253
unit and fixed the problem. Charged me US$ 75.00. I´m in Brazil.

I've had teh same experience with a BenQ MP720 ( just the XGA version of your Projector )
I queried this with BenQ Engineer in Dubai and he said that it sometimes works exactly like a short on the machine.
If I could give you a tip , If it happens again don't put back the metal cover of the Mainboard it solves the problem 100%
If the lamp usage time has passed 2 000 hours (when LAMP POWER has been set to NORMAL), the projector will switch to standby mode after approximately 10 minutes of operation. The resetting procedure should thus be completed within 10 minutes.
1. Insert the power cord plug into the wall outlet and then
press the MAIN POWER switch.
2. Press the POWER button so that a picture is projected onto
the screen.
3. Press the MENU button to display the menu screen, and
then press the F or G button to select the OPTION menu.
4. Press the ENTER button, and then press the F or G button
to select LAMP RUNTIME.
5. Press and hold the ENTER button for approximately
3 seconds. The confirmation screen, "LAMP RUNTIME
RESET." is displayed and select OK.
6. Turn off the power.
This will reset the cumulative usage time for the lamp
unit to zero.

I have an MP610 which turns on for a few minutes then the "Temp" (temperature) light comes on. Then a few seconds later the fans become a little louder (faster?) and then the bulb turns off and when the unit has cooled down the fans go off and the power turns off.
It is outside its 12m warrenty, so I took the top off it. The fans are both moving freely, and appear to be working fine. There doesn't appear to be much heat coming from the fans before it cut off - the air hardly got warm.
I started up the projector with the top off (hoping it might run cooler that way) but the same cycle occurred.
I disconnected it from the mains, I took the metal cover off the circuit board, (which required only disconnecting three screws incl one which was securing an earth connection) in the hope that I would find a variable resistor to re-adjust the temperature sensor (assuming this had gone wrong). I found nothing but solid-state circuitry, unsurprisingly.
I screwed the cover back on (including the earth wire) and turned it on again, and now it is running without cutting out. Why? I didn't do anything!
It has now been running for several minutes and the air from both fans is fairly warm (but not hot).
What caused this? Will it happen again? What should I do if it does happen - take it apart and put it back together again?
