We need a model number to help you further.
Some washers have a locking mechanism in the hinge, others have it on the opposite side. The older ones don't lock but won't allow the washer to spin or agitate if the door is open.

Whirlpool cabrio washer lid repair by kevin miller

Hello, Joan -

Are you referring to the review by ChrisG on Amazon.com regarding the Whirlpool W10349235 Lid Assembly Washer (link):
https://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-W10349235-Lid-Assembly-Washer/dp/B00LTYSPNK

This is a copy of ChrisG's review there:

USE DIFFERENT PARTS AND THE PROBLEM WILL BE SOLVED FOR GOOD
July 7, 2016

Don't waste your time replacing your cracked lid with yet another lid that will crack. The tension in the springs is too much for the plastic frame of the lid.

The CORRECT FIX was recommended by Kevin Miller on the fixya website.

Use lid part # 8572026. It's a completely solid metal lid. Use two hinges, part # 8563964, since the existing hinges wont work with the new lid. Use four screws, part # W10119828, for mounting the new lid to the new hinges.

I used the above parts that Kevin recommended and it worked perfectly. Check my before and after photos.

Replacing it was easy. I simply removed the two screws on each side of the lid connecting it to the hinge. Pulled the lid off. One of the hinges pulled out easily. The other I had to spray with lubricant and eventually it came out.

The installation was just the reverse. Slide the hinges into the holes of the lid and into the holes in the washer and then drive in the screws through the lid into the hinges.

BTW, at one point my washer was spinning and did sound like a jet engine but it was still covered so they came and replaced the bearings. So I am good for now.

Lid problems

If you are using the box to keep downward pressure on the lid because it won't stay closed, you most likely need the left and or right hinge/spring unit replaced, these retail for about $57.00 each. You have two dispenser compartments in the rear left and right, since the bleach is on the left, it often causes rust on/within the hinge assy either from disect splash, or from vapors. If the rear lid trim has come un glued from the lid and the lid is very flimsy, than the entire glass lid needs to be replaced. These retail for about $215.00. Pleazer Appliance...

How do I replace lid assembly for Whirlpool WTW8800YC 4.6 Cu. Ft. Cabrio Platinum Top Load Washer

Hi Sarah, there are two screws on each side of the lid holding the shaft for the hinges. Open the lid to access them, You will need an Allen wrench to take them off, after that, just lift the lid up to take it out. Hope this help. Thanks.

Glass separating from lid

Replace with steel lid. Parts below but first I have to get my 2 cents in!
I bought the replacement glass lid and it broke within the first week. Terrible design! They are using double sided tape to hold the glass to the hinge. There is too much spring tension to be held with tape. Way to go whirlpool engineers. I'm just a welder with 1 year of school and I figured that out? Hmmmm?

Steel lid retro fit
Whirlpool will tell you it can't be done. However I did and it works and looks perfectly.

here's the parts you need
All from a WTW8200 series washer
Part prices from Sears. I'm sure you can find them cheaper elsewhere if you look. I bought from sears to utilize the return policy while figuring out what parts to get. Thanks Sears! Give them the business if you can!!
1 pc 8572026 Steel lid $40.90
2 pcs 8563964 hinge $6.99 ea (hinge from the glass lid are different and the screw holes won't line up)
4 pcs W10119828 $3.99 ea (could probably get from the hardware store for half the cost.
Solution 2:
buy a replacement glass lid from whirlpool and send them your broken original glass lid and get a refund for the one you just bought. Repeat as needed until they figure out they need to produce a quality product.
