I HAVE A KENMORE 500 ELECTRIC DRYER. I REPLACED THE LIGHT AND THE DRYER STILL DOES NOT STOP WITH THE DOOR OPEN AND THE NEW LIGHT DOES NOT WORK. THE DRYER WILL ONLY STOP IF IT IS TURNED OFF.
There is a switch that when the dryer door is opened it signals the dryer to stop and the light to come on. Look around the edges of where the door meets the panel for the switch and make sure that there is no lint or anything else that would cause it to fail to make contact with the contact points inside. It could also have completely failed and need to be replaced.

It sounds like the button that acknowledges when the door is closed is jammed or broken. When you close the door it pushes the button in and it then turns off the light and allows you to use the dryer. If its jammed or broke it will not let the light turn on or stop spinning because it thinks the door is closed because the button is pushed in.
The dryer has a switch in the door that is activated when the door is opened/closed, replace this switch or check the connector to it or the wiring.
