Unfortunately the ac adapter that I was given with the keyboard has the wrong connections. The keyboard itself is a Roland Rhodes 660. However, as Roland no longer supplies ac adapters for it, I have recently seen A Casio alternative adapter with the correct polarity, pins, Watts and amp. EG, 9V, 850mA Plus, centre, minus.
My question is, would this be ok to use with the keyboard?

This could be a loose plug inside the unit or it could be a circuit that is bad. If the plug failed it is from physical damage from something like tripping over it or heavy use. That can be repaired by replacing the plug. If it is something like a component in the unit on a board then it becomes a little more involved.

Does it have a place for batteries? If so try that. If that works then you know something is wrong with adapter, or connector. Have you made sure you have the polarity correct on the adaptor. Generally the center is positive, but not always. Do you have a miltimeter to test the voltage on the adaptor, 9 volt sounds low on a device like that. Try those an get back to post.
I would need a little more detailed description of the issue however I assume you plugged in the power AC adapter and "it shorted out" the Roland unit. did you use the correct AC adapter? Many time the original unit is lost and an alternate is used which is not of the same configuration. Let me know.
Some Casio Keyboards use 9V DC (center negative) others 12V DC (center negative).
If check what voltage your Keyboard use. Generic AC adapters are usually center positive. So you have to invert the wire with a new DC plug to make it center negative,
Easiest is to buy a Casio ac adapter made for your keyboard from a Casio retailer.
Are you using the correct AC adapter? An aftermarket unit will do this if the power is insufficient, or the polarity is wrong (- / +). If you're using an aftermarket unit, it may not be providing the right amount of Amps and Voltage to the unit; causing the display to blink. Check for corrosion on battery contacts. If this unit can use an AC adapter, often the switch contact in the power plug that connects the batteries when adapter is removed gets bent and fails to connect the batteries.
