Try unplugging the machine for at least 5 minutes, this may clear your error. Otherwise you may have to contact Brother as I could not find this error listed in the owner's manual. If you don't have a manual, here is a link to it:

Open the small cover that hides the scanner flat cable. It has to be reconnected to the main pcb.

Confirm Success on a 440CN
1) Remove Plastic wire covers from inside printers, and release plastic stay on lower edge, tilt cover to 90 Degrees
2) make a note of where each connector goes
3) release the Ribbon and 3 Multicore cables, removing grounding screw, then remove scanner module by sliding it off the hinges at 90 degrees.
4) Remove Three Front Panel Screws, carefully leaver front panel upwards releasing front side clips.
5) Remove front panel by disconnecting ribbon and wireing on both sides.
6) Remove 6 Screws (2 on back, three at front and one middle right
7) Carefully remove speaker cable (Red Connector) and lift up plastic casing, leaving printer uncovered.
8) Re-Seat Encoder Strip into guide. (The Transparent strip)
9) Re-assemble in reverse and Hey Presto.
All Cured. Hopefully!

The problem is in the scanner motor.To cancel the trouble status follows these steps:
STEP1 .Press MENU
*,2,8,6,4
STEP2.The machine beeps for approx.
one second and displays “MAINTENANCE" on the
LCD, indicating that it is placed in
the initial stage of the maintenance mode, a mode in which
the machine is ready to accept entry
from the keys.
STEP3.Now you are inside the
simulation Press 01 to reset the
trouble status.
STEP4.To exit the simulation press 99
• Pressing the 9 key twice
in the initial stage of the maintenance mode makes the machine
exit from
the maintenance mode, restoring it to the standby state.
• Pressing the Stop button
after entering only one digit restores the machine to the initial
stage of
the maintenance mode.
I hope that this will cancel the error but if not canceled you should call the authorized serviceman to fix your machine.
