GoPro battery dead. Won't charge in the camera. No charge light comes on when you connect the camera to a USB. There's the scenario. Good tip on the GoPro battery shocking technique posted by Rabscuttle above. I discovered that my vehicle USB cigarette lighter adapter drains the GoPro battery when it's turned off. With the GoPro battery completely dead, the camera will not charge it. If the GoPro battery voltage falls below a certain point, the camera's circuitry is set to turn off the internal charger as if there's no battery in the camera at all. The recommended solution is to buy an external charger, which is able to charge a completely dead battery. The battery shocking method saves that expense.
Connecting a 9 volt battery to the GoPro battery for 30 seconds can give the battery enough charge to allow the camera to recognize the battery. A 9 volt battery from a smoke detector, a pair of jumper leads, and two straight pins is what I used to get my GoPro battery charged enough to allow the camera to recognize the battery and begin charging.
We've found the best way is to remove the SD card and the batteries for at least 30 seconds and then reinstall both and turn the camera on. Remember, that in addition to the data saved on the SD card, by plugging your camera into your PC with the USB cable you will be able to find any images or video stored on the camera's built in memory.
