My craftsman 1/2 hp garage door starts to close and then opens up

Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener, push button, closes about an inch, then goes back up. If I hold the button it will go down. This is an older unit, has a force sensor, but no beam sensors. Door opens and closes smoothly if releaseed from chain (no binding), and I have tried to adjust down force. It was set high enough that chain went slack when it tried to close on a 4 x 4. Is there some board or something that could have gone bad? Is there something to bypass the beam sensors? Thanks.

I had a simular issue, except mine was that the previous owner decided to mess with all the settings and mounts and screwed everything up.

The problem isn't your force sensors its your downwards stopping sensor on the opposite side of the opener. For me I had to take the entire panel off and replace the sensor back in its holder, but try adjusting that sensor setting (clockwise goes down, counterclockwise goes up).

If that doesn't work then i dunno:)

Also set both force settings in between 0-1, for some reason with mine if i set it higher it would set them off....

My Craftsman garage door will not close, only a few inches at a time

have a problem which returns every year when outdoor temperatures drop close to freezing. garage door will open only a few inches, then stops. I can close it and try opening it again... same result. After five or six such attempts it typically will open. Interestingly, when I push the switch button mounted on the interior wall of my garage and keep it pushed, the door will open, until I release the button at which point it stops opening.

If the main light flashes 10 times when you try to close the door it is a sensor problem. Make sure they are not flickering ever so slightly and that they are not loose on their brackets. Tweak them a little bit.

First check the door springs. Most likely you have a broken spring. If not, remove the cover from the motor unit and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor and is likely stripped.

Access Master 1/3 HP garage door does not close, blinks

Most likely your door sensors are out of alignment. Make sure they are pointed directly at one another.

I just installed a sears craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener. when i close the garage door with the remote the chain track bends up just about 12 inches before it closes all the way, and this only happens...

What is wrong is you need to adjust the limit on the door when it comes up. What it is doing is coming to far back on the track. You need to push the back limit forward away from the motor so the door does not come back and drop down on the inside of the garage. The opener is trying to push the door up hill to get it to close that is why you are getting the bend in the track.

Craftsman 1/2 HP garage opener opens only 6 inches

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor. It may be stripped. Take a close look at those door springs. They can sometime appear to be okay when one is broken.

Have to hold the push button inside my garage to close garage.

You have a door sensor problem. Make sure the sensors are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking. Also check the wiring.

I have a craftsman garage door opener (1/2 hp) won't close proper

Check your door sensors. They have probably been bumped. Tweak them until they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking.
