I replaced the lamp in my sb21, but now the right side of the projection is dark. left side is clear and sharp but starts to go dark about midway across. Could the new bulb just need to be cleaned?

Back light problem.

To begin with remove lamp and make sure nothing happened there as if the light is partly obstructed it could cause this

I worked on a lot of these sets when they were new but do not think I have seen or heard of a issue quite like this---too odd it happened shortly after a lamp was replaced.

By the way I am sure you know or knew not to touch the face of the lamp with your fingers.

Yes,replaced it with another brand new lamp the same exactly as the original lamp was inside the tv when it was purchase,if u still have the same problems.Then ur tv the main projection unit is defective.This kind of problems,than the tv it is not worth repairing.Because the CPU projection unit cost about 70% of the tv.

If you get a picture but its too dark, you are in need of a replacement lamp. On the left or right side of the TV you will find a orange sticker with black lettering with numbers like BP96- **** That will be your lamp part number. Once you have that number just do a google search for it and you will come up with many sources for it and varying prices. Just make sure you purchase the complete lamp as sone sell just the bulb, but that requires you to disasemble the lamp assembly and replace the bulb which is sensitive to fingerprints on it. Here is the solution straight from the lips of tec support at sharp.

This can happen due to a power outage.

Here is how you fix it.

1. Hit clear, then auto. (clear is on the right the red C, auto is on the far left)
2. Once again Hit clear, then auto. (clear is on the right the red C, auto is on the far left)

At this point wait for the screen to go dark.

3. Type in 14 (hit the 10 once an the 1 button 4 times)
4. Hit the Green Button.

The screen will go dark and reset the copier.

the reflecting mirror is likely loose and falling down inside the light reflecting tube. you should have seen the band getting darker and larger,
the small mirror is in front of the lamp and bends the light,
remove the lamp and look down the tube (light path)

There is a very picky sensor on the lamp cover. When the lamp and cover are seated perfectly, your lamp will start.

You had 5 jams in the fuser the hotarea on the left side of your machine.

You need to replace the lamp to fix that issue. The lamps part number will be on the side of the TV. The part number will vary from set to set deending on which light engine it has in it. The part number will start with BP96-0???. It is a user replaceable part.
