I have a Kohler spa tub. I want to change the air switch on the top of a Kohler Proflex #1157 motor. I cannot seem to figure out how to get the top of the switch off. I cannot find any screw heads.

I don't know this specific tub, but here's the pictoral. The button (90105) should come out of its base, held by friction of O ring. This should allow you to disconnect the pressure line. If you are looking to replace the complete assembly, likely you will need a basin wrench to reach nut (65157).

The air switch on my Kohler 1151-RA whirlpool tub is stuck, pushed in and will not eject out

When the air button stays in the down position it can be because of a couple of things.

  • The air bellow is broken and there is no air in it or the spring is broken and will not push the button back up and needs to be replaced.
  • There is calcium built up on the inside of the air button so that the tolerance is too large and therefor makes the button 'stick'
To solve the second issue with calcium build up. Take some emery cloth and wipe the inside of the button until it is smooth.
You should be able to get the button back up gently with a small wire placed between the button and the wall of the air button body.

Whirlpool does not turn on. Kohler Model K-1474-V

The chances that is problem you are experiencing is related to the suction cover is extremely remote. The suction assembly doesn't have anything to do with the tub motor operating.
The issue is most likely with the motor not working or the air switch in the motor malfunctioning.
What does the control look like that you use to turn the pump on/off?
Is it an air button or an electronic switch?

The air switch on my Kohler whirlpool tub, when depressed will not start the motor. However, if I take the plastic hose off the switch and blow into it, the motor starts fine. I've replaced the ai

There are Air Switches (at the motor or control box) and Air buttons (on the spa/bath side). The vinyl tube between them is the only other component to the 'switching' on/off a hole in the tube may cause this problem.
The air switch has a diaphragm which is activated by the air in the tube when the button is pressed. If the air pressure is not sufficient the switch will not operate.
As you've replaced your Air button, you might want to change the tubing and either adjust the Air Switch or replace it. The switch only needs 1-5psi to activate so the pressure from you blowing into the tube can damage the diaphragm in the switch.

My Kohler whirlpool started on its own with no water in it. We turned it off with the switch and it hasn't happened again. Is there a danger of it starting a fire if we are away from home and it does it...

Most Kohler tubs have a water sensor or water level sensor. Is this an air bath tub (holes in the floor)? or a jetted tub? If it is an air bath, the tub will purge after using it 15 to 30 minutes ater it is drained. If it is programable it will come on every 24 hours if it has been programmed. If it is a jetted tub, there may have been water on the sensor and caused it to start up. If it is a single on/off button the switch could have gotten water and caused it to start up, or there is a problem with the control box. It usually will not start a fire if it comes on, most of the newer pumps have run dry seals. If you leave the house for vacation or weekends, I would advise unplugging the tub or turning off the breaker.

How to identify make and model of old whirlpool tub?

This is a problem common to all whirlpool/air jet style tubs. The pumps become air locked due to the water evaporating from lack of use. All tubs need, and have, SOME means of priming the pump, this is most likely what the problem was, originally, for you. This time in particular you found it to be electrical in nature but for future reference, for you and all who have these style of tubs, I am putting this out there. Some where on the tub, usually along the top edge of the tub is a vent knob that controls the amount of air that the pump is allowed to mix with the water for the jets, usually by closing this valve all the way (tub needs to be full of water of course) and running the pump for a minute or 2, you should be able to get the pump pumping water again, if not you may need to do something else with your particular set-up to get it purged of air, the pumps in jacuzzi tubs are designed to pump water, not air, so if the motor is running but you get no jet action, your most likely air locked and need to prime pump/purge air.
