Wast tray too full to remove

Although I agree totally, the anwer is no. Althought it appears black, take a piece of it an use it like a crayon. It is a combination of all the color inks combined. So if you take and rub it on a piece of paper it will be a purple color. So threfore would not create proper colors.
Now to save ink, Do not turn the printer off at all. Just let it use its own sleep mode. The power consumption is intermittent to keep the print head warm and uses about the same ammount of electricity as your refridgerator light bulb. The reason being, when you turn off a solid ink printer, it purges the print head of ALL old ink and dumps it into the waste tray. That is part of those weird noises you hear when you cycle up the machine, one is a compressor emptying the print head.
Also, honestly, althogh I am not sure what you are using the machine for. But you would be wise to put that product on a pay per page maintenance agreement. That includes all ink and all service. Some of the parts for those printers are super expensive.
I will say one thing you can do with that waste ink, if you know anyone who has children, they can use them as purple crayons..

you can remove it and CAREFULLY shake out the waste toner. You can do this 2 or 3 times (depending on how many pages you've done). Eventually the internal counter will not let you do it anymore, and you'll have to buy a new waste tank ($15-20).

The optical sensor looks at a small compartment, that has clear walls; when the waste toner gradually fills the container, it eventually reaches the level above a "wall" between the main container and this small compartment, spills inside and makes not transparent anymore. Some toner might have gotten there and the sensor gives a false full signal. You can get rid of it by cleaning this compartment with compressed air.
Obviously, the sensor might be plain broken as well, but the above is perfectly true - it saves the day when the printer stops and we don't have a new waste container... I pour out the toner and clean the inside thoroughly with compressed air, especially that small look-through compartment.

The waste tray is parallel to the maintenance (cleaning) tray. If you miss the 30 second window (seriously) to remove the waste tray the printer will lock the tray by dropping a small plastic arm (which can break if you pull on it too hard). However, the small plastic arm is accessible from the maintenance tray slot. If you look inside the maintenance tray slot (the left slot) on the right wall roughly 1 1/2 inches in you will see a tiny white square piece that you can easily reach with your index finger. Just apply light pressure to the top of that white piece and it will lift the plastic stop that is holding in the waste tray. If there is any resistance when you try to push down on that white plastic piece just try either gently pushing or pulling the waste tray to ensure that the white locking piece isn't caught on the tray.
