If you go to the screen on the printer and scroll through the options you can reset the printer to the factory settings. The screen is on the printer on the bottom right side as you face the front of the printer.
I hate to say it but good luck. HP makes very little available for the standard officejet products in terms of parts or manuals. They mostly treat these as return to HP for repair or if under warranty they do a exchange for a refurbished unit.
All refill sets, come with a good description. But before you buy ink, make sure your cartridges can be filled and the chip can be reset. So you won't end with filled and unusable cartridges and dirty hands.

When you did install the correct HP programs that came with the printer I think it should work. Uninstall the olde HP programs and doe a complete reinstall, before reconnecting the printer. That should solve the problem.
Always FIRST install the software, then connect the device to the computer.
