Kenmore Elite wouldn't stop filling - overflowed. I turned off water at spigots and then was able to spin out the water. If I try to was with the spigots turned on, it agitates, but keeps filling. It will also keep filling when it spins unless the spigots are turned off. I have one load to go, so I'll let it fill, turn off spigots, let it agitate & Spin, turn on spigots to fill for rinse, etc.

you either have too much stuff in it or something that gets under
the agitator or it has a weak transmission

replace the water inlet valve, the valve that the black hat and cold lines connect to

Does the bottom of your agitator work correctly? We had the same problem if you pop the cap off the top of your agitator there is a cam in there with 3 dogs that engage the agitator causing it to spin. If the bottom part is agitating correctly then chances are the dogs in the cam assembly are shot. If the bottom is agitating correctly then it is very possible you have something stuck under the bottom section of the agitator. If this is the case remove the top cover (same as before it's just a lid that pops off) inside you will see a 1/2" square use a 1/2" drive ratchet with a 3" or 6" extension unscrew this piece remove the top section of the agitator then the bottom. Once the bottom is out check to make sure all is clear inside the washer. Reassemble in the reverse order making sure the lower section sits all the way down on the splines for the drive mechanism. If neither one of those solve the problem I would suspect you have an issue in the drive train of the washer.

You have a problem with the motor coupling. Top-load washers use what's called a direct-drive system, meaning it does not use a belt but what's called a "motor coupling". I probably replace 5 a week because these little guys break because of 2 reasons that i've found.
1) The break mechanism is too dry and causing the basket to stop at a holt, which puts a lot of strain on the coupler.
2) They break because of over-loading. I don't think you're over-loading though because it was find for 5 straight years.
Good luck to you. The repair is kind of hard to do on your own for the first time, so I would call an authorized technician. It will run you anywhere between $90 to $120 at most.
Best of luck!
