First it could be leaking from the control knob when it is on . There could be a leak at the base off the burner letting out gas or on the burner line . You need to get back on to your installer or where you purchased the cook top . This basic gas fitting leak detection .
Usually this happens if something has been spilled or a pan overflowed and is partially clogging some of the burner holes. Make sure the burner holes are clear and try poking them with a sewing needle to make sure. I am assuming the flames are a nice blue color and not a lazy yellow or yellow-tipped. If there is some orange, that is usually an indication you are burning off some food and will need to be cleaned. If that doesn't appear to be the issue, then let us know and we'll dig deeper. What you had was a slow short - practically the same thing as in a welder: big and loud flame, localized and the amperage isn't that great. As such it's very possible that the breaker wasn't tripped, especially if you had a big one, over 30Amps.

You will have to use a putty knife to separate the top from the burner box. After you do your repair you will also need 107 inches of burner box tape to re-seal the top.
By this description you gave it sounds as your oven burner has a flash back ,when it is like that does your flame look very yellow and gives off a Funny Smell ( which i Will think it is CARBON MONOXIDE . Remove the Oven burner make sure you watch for any wires attached to the burner (yes even in a Gas Stove) that would be part of your safety device . Well . Clean it out Make sure your Injector is Clear Carefully replace your Burner Making sure it fits over the Injector ,Replace any wirer if you removed any and relight
I would say that pop was one of you igniters. either that or the stove is not installed correctly and when it gets warm, thermal expansion makes the metal pop. I would say that I would use caution and discontinue its use. Most problems with these need to fixed professionally.
first, disable power to cooktop. next, replace either the mangled burner or the entire unit (after initial inspection leads to a logical prognosis)...sorry.
