Bernina uses a proprietary type of presser foot. They have changed over the years. Your 830 uses a two prong or fork style presser foot. They have two prongs going upwards at the end that attaches to the needle bar. Your machine was designed to use the style that has the thicker prongs but can also use the thinner prong presser feet. If you need to sew something thick like blue jean hems or sew really fast, the thicker prongs will be more stable on your machine since it is what it was designed to use that foot. Also use Bernina bobbins too. The Singer bobbins fit but are just slightly different in size so the sewing won't be as smooth and will also cause wear to the machine over time.

Bernina uses a different foot than other machines.

Look for presser feet that are specifically for Bernina (watch out--Bernina has old-old-style, old style, and new-style presser feet). So if you have a Bernina 830 Record (all mechanical, pre-1980 manufacture), you can use old-old-style and old-style feet, but NOT new-style Bernina presser feet!). Old-style presser feet usually have black labeling. Old-old-style presser feet are metal with the labeling stamped into the metal or some have no labeling at all.

If you have the newer Bernina 830 computerized model, you will have to purchase the new-style Bernina presser feet (usually they have red labeling).

The new-style are not interchangeable with the old-style and old-old-style feet, and vice versa.

However, the old-style & old-old-style will usually work on Berninas manufactured prior to 1998 (ie the 1260).

You can also purchase a Bernina adapter shank (look on eBay and verify that it will work on your particular model) or ask at the Bernina store. Then you can purchase a set of snap-on feet that will work with the adapter.

I have a Bernina Virtuosa 155 - does this have a high shank or low shank?

Bernina is unique and uses only Bernina feet with the exception of an adapter foot and there are two lengths
be sure you have a low shank foot and try it on the adapter foot and machine to be sure it fits correctly

Is Bernina 450 a low shank machine or a high shank

Using Standard Low Shank Feet
There are 2 different adaptors available that will allow you to use standard low shank presser feet and snap on feet. Some people prefer this method instead of forking out $20-$50 per Bernina presser foot. If you have other sewing machines, it may make sense financially to invest in more low shank or snap on feet that you can take from machine to machine. If you decide to go this route, I just want to remind you that if your machine uses the presser feet with the sensors, these adaptors will not trigger those sensors.
Use Snap On Presser Feet
This snap on presser foot adaptor is available in both old style and new style. When ordering your generic snap on feet for this shank adaptor, be sure you're ordering the correct maximum stitch width that your machine has. This is a very convenient shank since you're able to quickly switch between many different feet without having to remove the shank.
Use Low Shank Presser Feet
Chances are if you sew, you have low shank feet laying around (or 40). This low shank presser foot adaptor is available in both old styleand new style. Simply install this shank like a normal Bernina foot, and then screw your low shank foot to the shank. If you install a low shank foot onto this adaptor, be sure to test with a wide zig zag to make sure the installed foot is wide enough to accommodate your machines maximum stitch width.

Does my artista 170 have a low shank or a high shank?

Your Artista takes the Bernina foot. A regular presser foot will not work on your Bernina because the attachment mechanism is specific. Be sure to check with your Bernina dealer because there are old style and new style presser feet, and you need to get the right ones for your Artista.

Presser feet for every purpose

Even if you purchase a generic presser foot, you need to be sure you get the Bernina shank(or adapter if it is a snap-on). http://www.nancysnotions.com/product/bernina+shank+adaptor+.do

Is bernina 930 a low shank or high shank machine

Bernina has feet that are specific to their machines only. They have old and new style feet depending when the machine was made. You cannot put generic low, high, slant or snap on feet on a Bernina sewing machine.

Is the Bernina 1230 a low shank or high shank machine?

BEWARE! Bernina machines take a special Bernina-only foot, and even the older Bernina mechanical feet will not fit the newer Berninas, and vice versa.

For the most part, your 1260 uses the old style presser foot--BUT be sure to check as there are some old style that will NOT work on your machine. (Be sure to CONFIRM whether it will work on your machine as I believe the 1260 has some specifics that will not take all old style.) Red marked presser feet are only new style (ie computerized machines). The difference is in how the presser foot is designed at the top where it attaches to the machine. Your Bernina dealer generally carries both the old and new style. BEFORE you buy, be sure to ask whether you are getting the right foot for the 1260!

Look at the top of these presser feet so you can recognize what you need. You are probably safe buying the presser feet that have the 2 pegs at the top (if it has solid peg across the top, it may not work):

Bernina Presser Feet (presser foot guide)

You can use snap-on feet BUT you still need a Bernina Adapter in order to do so.

Can I use my Bernina Activa 145 walking foot on a Bernina Bernette715?

I'm guessing, but don't think they are interchangeable. From what I've read, the Bernette is actually made by Janome. It appears that the Bernette uses snap-on presser feet and also has a low-shank. The Bernina 145 uses a special peg-in-a-hole design to attach to the machine, although snap-on feet can be used on Bernina machines with a special snap-on adapter. But from the photos, I could locate on the internet, it appears the shank on the 145 is longer. If still in doubt, contact a Bernina dealer.

I have lost my manual. How do I do roll hems?

Hi. You really need to get a replacement manual--it's the most important accessory your machine has! Without knowing what kind of machine you have, I can't be very specific, but try http://www.tias.com/stores/relics/. Linda has most every manual out there.

Generally speaking, to do a rolled hem, you need a rolled hem foot. They are readily available for most machines, but you'll need to know if your machine uses low shank, high shank, slant shank, or snap-on feet. Generally, unless your machine is very old or a Bernina, feet are interchangeable. Check the selection of pressure feet at http://www.sewingmachinesplus.com/sewing-feet.php?src=google&cmp=Accessories_&_Parts&adgp=Sewing_Machine_Presser_Feet&kw=presser_foot_Broad&gclid=CP2M-LKd_ZgCFSQhDQodwhUylg. They also have pictures of the various shank types, to help you identify yours.

Hope this helps!

I have lost the zipper foot and button hole foot, and I have a wedding dress and 5 bridesmaid dresses to make....have tried everywhere, where can I get new feet????

I've found replacement feet at Jo-ann's and Hancock's. The most important thing to know is whether your machine is a low shank, high shank, or slant shank. Other than that, or perhaps (depending on where you live) a a full-service sewing machine retailer or maybe a quilt shop, you'll need to order them online. Try http://sewingpartsonline.com/ they have a qood selection of pressure feet. I've found that pretty much, within the low shank, high shank, and slant shank categories, feet are pretty much interchangeable.

Good luck!

My Necchi 681c has snap on feet, can other makes used with it

Yes, probably. You'll need to unscrew the little gizmo that holds the snap on feet, then you can use that same screw and hole in the shank to screw on other types of feet. The most important thing is to know whether you have a low shank, high shank, or slanted shank machine, because feet of one type can't be used on other types (low shank feet can't be used on high shank or slanted shank machines, for example).
