I have this Sony bdp S6700 blu ray player region B for Blu rays thats no problem I was told they are region free for dvds from a number of articles but this one is only DVD region 4 how can I unlock the region code to make it region free for dvds
Make a copy with Blu-ray copy software which can remove protection on your disc. If it is a 4K Blu-ray disc, then you should use Leawo UHD Copy.
Hardware solution: The easiest way to play different regions DVD on Mac is to buy a region-free player, however, if you've already got a nice DVD player, you can use hacks to turn off the region code in your DVD player. Note that hacking your DVD player region code is a violation of the DMCA and this is ******* in the United States.
Software solution: If you live in the United States and you want a solution that will work on any DVD player but not to hack your DVD player, another best solution for you is to make a copy of the movie, although backing up copies of DVD is currently ******* in the United States, it will become available in the future. Then what you need to do is to using one of the popular ripping programs on the market, here, I would like to suggest you Free DVDAid, which enables you to make a 1:1 copy of the original DVD disc without quality loss with all audio streams and subtitle tracks well preserved. You will get a DVD that works that can work in any DVD player.

I don't think that it is illegal to change the region of a DVD player as a DVD drive in a computer can be changed easily up to 5 times before they are locked on one region. Sony Blu-Ray players at this point don't have a hack code and they have to have a hardware mod to play both region A and B Blu-Ray discs. There are inexpensive Phillips DVD players that are region free or they have an easy method to make them region unlocked. I don't know of any Blu-Ray players that have that feature, but you can get a N. American region coded player that will play both PAL and NTSC, but you will have to use a voltage converter as N America is 120V 60Hz and Europe is 220-240 @ 50hz.
The other option is to get a Blu-Ray/DVD RW drive for your computer and set it as a region 1drive and connect it to the TV for playing US discs.
There are other things you can do but those ARE illegal or questionable and I can't post them here.
Best of luck

At one time there were illegal services which would modify your gear, if you paid and mailed them the device. I don't think that is possible now; it was never advisable.
The DVD distributors have a large vested interested in controlling sales by region. For a premium price, you can buy a multi-region player.
There is really nothing you can do unless you want to play the risky game of downloading firmware modifications which could leave you with a "brick" that won't play anything.
