  • The motor / cord compartment cover must be removed to access the cord reel. There are four screws that hold the cover to the chassis. Two of the screws are found under the cord-retractor-foot-pedal on the top back of the canister. To access these screws the pedal must be removed. To do this, press the pedal down and look (from the top) for the four plastic clips that attach/hold the pedal hinges to the cover. There are two at the end corners and two in the middle. Using a long, thin flat-head screw driver (or similar instrument) press each clip to unhook/popout the hinges. Note: the foot pedal spring will also come out when the pedal is removed.

The other two screws are found under the curved hinges of the vaccum bag compartment cover. To access these, lift the cover as if accessing the vacuum bag. Keep pulling the cover back until the hinges release from the motor cover. Don't worry, it is disigned to do this and will not break but it may require a little force. A long phillip-head screw driver will be needed to access and remove each screw

The power head of my 1165581590C Kenmore Power mate Whispertone 12 amp vacuum won't open. It is an older model and it desparately needs a clean!

I am not 100% sure of the model number but most of their powerheads come apart quite easily if you know how. There is a light lens cover on the top of your powerhead. On each side of this cover there is a little clip that holds it in place. You can usually see that spot by simply taking your thumb and pushing the light cover to one side or the other. Place a small flat head screwdriver in that slot and gently pry upward.

Once that cover is off, you will see two screws. Remove those two screws. Now simply grab each side of the cover towards the bottom and back of the nozzle and pull out. This should release it from the base. It will lift from forward from back to front..

Reassembly is pretty easy. Just reverse the instructions.

Let me know if this helps.

Doesn't turn on

Gain access to the electrical connection with voltmeter set to 110 v ac check for voltage on both sides of switch. If voltage is present on outlet side follow output wire to start relay ck for power on out put side of relay. if power follow output wire to motor if voltage is present replace motor ! Be careful where you touch when probing contacts !

Sears Kenmore Whispertone Vacuum Problem:

If you push inwards on each side of the light cover on top you can remove it. With the light cover removed remove the (2) access screws. Now you will be able lift of the entire top cover from the base. You will then see the belt and roller brush, remove the old belt and replace with a new one. You can get the replacement belt you need here:

Belt broke, can't get bottom off

if it's the one in the picture then pop off the light cover by gently pushing in and prying on both sides . Remove the bulb by pushing and twisting , OK?, now see the 2 screws? take them out. now flip over the powerhead and gently pry at both sides toward the rear wheels.
