'92 SEADOO xp.has begun to run very slow and rough-dies when given gas but will idle rough.I pulled off rear cyl spark plug wire and engine ran same.New pugs seemed to solve problem for 10 min, then...
If your compression and spark appear normal the electrics are probably not an issue. New plugs fixing it for 10 minutes sounds like a carb issue. I had two 92 XPs'. Did full rebuilds on both, top to bottom, cranks, rods pistons etc etc, and the dual carbs were a pain to adjust. First you may need to rebuild the carbs as there is a good chance, with the age, that there is crud/shellac or other corruption causing issues and causing the mixture to run rich and foul your plugs. That is a carb rebuild. Next is the evil oil injection pump. Are the plugs black/oily when you take them out (they should be caramel brown)? Is the exhaust bluer than normal? If either of these are the case there is the automatic oil injection pump that is married (for want of a better analogy) to the carb and throttle. These can fail to inject oil (no blue exhaust) and your engine just seizes up and requires rebuild or as may be in your case, jams wide open and over oils the engine and fouls the plugs. It may be a mix of both issues too. As I remember there is a tiny wee fuel filter inside the carb inlet that can cause untold grief too. It is a pain but I did get the carbs out, with the engines left in, to work on them on the bench. There are also the monstrously difficult mixture adjustment screws, one with a tee pin through it and the other with a flat head screw adjustment. The manual had some guidance on adjustment there but I remember that being a chore in of itself. Mikuni carbs i think. There is more than I can go into here on the net about adjustment, pwctoday comes to mind. I have a big 4-tec now with a jetpack for it. I do miss those 587s though. My mild port and over on the two I had got them up to 47 mph at WOT.
What an absolute blast to throw around the lake!
Good luck with the fixing.
