Not hot enough to damage counter tops, but it could be easily expected to get uncomfortably warm. They don't have a lot of insulation in them as they really don't want the heat to build up inside the unit.

Micro board is burnt up

Anthony, I have purchased what they call wave guide material from a company called QB Products. You can try Google to find if there is someone close to you that might have what you need. Catalog that I have is old but the number for the smallest size they list is 40QBP1012. That is for a piece 10" x 12". Hope this helps you. Make sure that when you take out the old cover that you clean the area underneath because what causes the burning is grease and food particles that get splattered up there and they get very hot and start causing the burning that you see.

Light shining underneath microwave(spacemaker xl1800)... and turn plate hot...

then the problem is somewhere in the high voltage part of the microwave. The first failure suspect is a high voltage diode (#50 on the break down diagram).

If you are going to do it yourself, be very careful and discharge the high voltage capacitor first.

Check the coupler and the turntable motor as described in the previous reply.

There is a separate motor for the top grille. If you can hear the motor running then the problem is with the grille itself.

I have a Spacesaver Microwave (manufactured 1988) that still seems to work ok, but I noticed on teh back wall under the glass tray the coating has rusted away. Should I continue to use this microwave?

Hi,

As long as the oven's metal bottom is sound underneath the rust, there isn't a problem. The cooking chamber walls are so thick and highly conducting that they reflect the microwaves extremely well even when they have a little rust on them. However, if the metal is so rusted that it loses most of its conductivity in the rust sites, you'll get local heating across the rusty patches and eventually leakage of microwaves. If you're really concerned that there may be trouble, run the microwave oven empty for about 20 seconds and then (carefully!) touch the rusty spots. If they aren't hot, then the metal underneath is doing its job just fine.

Thanks.
