See if ther is an adjustment at the top of the spring that holds the foot down

Thank you but there is no adjustment screw. :(

  • Bill Boyd Jul 24, 2016

if there is a spring around the shaft to which the foot is attached the adjustment is a the knurled collar around that shaft
turning it in increases the spring tension

Am unable to locate much information about the 1630, but did find this web site

http://www.quiltropolis.net/maillists/maillistsdetail.asp?catid=Bernina

where there is an Email Discussion Boards with a 1630 category. Perhaps someone on that board can provide the information you seek. There is also a Yahoo Group called "Bernina 1630 Devotees" that you could join and post your question.

I have difficulty believing the 1630 does not have a pressure adjustment feature as the older '30 models (930 & older) have that function. There was mention in several web sites about a silver screw on the left side of the machine (near the needlebar) that is a pressure adjustment on some Berninas.

Generally, the walking foot works much like the standard Bernina presser foot, ie the feed dogs move the fabric and you simply guide it in the direction you want. The difference is the walking foot employs something similar to feed dogs on the top of the fabric (much like the dual feed feet on newer machines). The walking foot should apply pressure to the feed dogs so you should not be able to manipulate the fabric unless the feed dogs are moving the fabric. If you want to manipulate the fabric yourself without the feed dogs, you may be thinking about the darning or a free motion quilting feet do not apply pressure to the needleplate (the feed dogs are dropped using these feet).

Perhaps this video showing the walking foot in action will be helpful:

Found in the conversations of "Bernina 1630 Devotees":
The Bernina 1630 does NOT have a presser foot adjustment but a Bernina technician can alter the pressure for you.

BERNINA ACTIVA 130 ADJUSTING UPPER TENSION FOR FINE SLIPPERY MATERIAL

Hope you have the owner's manual.

Sounds like your problem may have to do more with the amount of pressure the presser foot applies to the fabric. A lot of machines have a "pressure" adjustment so you would need to increase the pressure when sewing fine fabrics. You can also lay tissue paper (like the paper used for patterns or gift wrap) on the fabric which will help you control the fabric as you stitch.

As for tension, be sure you are using a fine sharp needle, like a 65 or 70 Microtex and a fine light weight thread. Using a different presser foot may be useful--perhaps a walking foot if you have one. Even using a single-hole needleplate may help. A looser top tension setting could prevent fabric puckering but so will adding tissue paper or fabric stabilizer.

The pressure foot pressure is not feeding the fabric. I have adjusted the tension but still not feeding the fabric. What else can I do?

Tension does not affect the ability of the machine to feed fabric, except in extreme cases perhaps when tension is too tight.

You probably need to adjust the presser foot pressure of your machine. Lighter weight fabric is more difficult to feed, therefore the pressure needs to be increased. (Heavy weight fabric will sometimes push the upper layer of fabric in front of the presser foot, therefore less pressure is required.) Even so, very fine slick fabric (silk, satin, chiffon) sometimes still needs additional help. In such cases, a roller foot, teflon foot, or walking foot may be beneficial. There is also the possibility that the feed dog teeth have been worn so they do not grip the fabric like they should. (Avoid running the machine without fabric between the presser foot and feed dogs to protect the feed dogs from unnecessary wear.) If they are worn, usually they can be replaced.

Another possibility is that the feed dogs do not raise as high as they should. This would most likely require a technician's assistance.

Um, as an additional thought, make sure the presser foot surface is smooth. Any rough surface (nicks, rust, etc) will restrict the fabric's ability to move.

Bernina 730 how do I change feed dog pressure it is way to high not touching fabric when down??? Help please

There are actually two Bernina 730 machines (confusing, huh?). One is the 730 Record from around 1960. The other is the more modern 730 computerized model made in the 21st century.

The 730 Record has a hidden pressure adjustment. Lift the top cover and locate the screwhead on the very left side (left of the takeup lever knuckles). This screw loosens or tightens the spring that applies pressure on the presser foot.
The manual can be downloaded here, although it does not show the pressure adjustment:
BERNINA Sewing Systems

On the computerized 730, the pressure adjustment is on the screen (pg 37 of the manual):

I am using my walking foot to stitch in the ditch my quilt. The foot is not pulling my fabric through consistently.

The quilted fabric may be too thick for the walking foot to move along smoothly. Try using a zipper foot which is much slimmer and can get close to the line of stitching.

How can I get my Bernina 750 to feed the top and bootom fabric pieces for quilts evenly

Try using a walking foot. The issue most quilters face when working with any sewing machine is that there is a force being applied to move the bottom fabric but the top fabric is only moving based on friction with the bottom fabric. This can cause the bottom fabric to move quicker than the top. A walking foot helps solve this issue by placing a second set of feed dogs on the top of the fabric to mirror the force being applied on the bottom, allowing both pieces of fabric to move evenly.

Hope that helps!

Bernina walking foot

Hm, just guessing here.

Have you checked to make sure the walking foot (u-shaped) bar is still attached to the needle bar? Are the feed dogs still in the up position and operating like they should?

Learn How to Use Sewing Machine Walking Foot

Something else that I've run across in my sewing adventures is that walking feet need periodic oiling to keep them operating. Just manipulate the walking foot with your hands and watch where there are moving joints. Then apply a small drop of good quality sewing machine oil to each joint. Work it in and then wipe off the excess so it won't stain your fabric.

I hav e Bernina 1150. When I attach the walking

Hi, when you quilt straight lines using the walking foot, you need the feed dogs up, to move the fabric in a straight direction under the needle. When you do free motion quilting, which is done with a darning foot, your hands move the fabric in many different directions. Since you want to be the one to move the fabric, you put the feed dogs down and you do the work. So when you use the walking foot, keep your feed dogs up. When you use the darning foot, feed dogs down.

I have an 1130 bernina and love it! with all fabric types the top material is not moving along with the bottom material when sewing seams. the lighter fabrics are puckering and the seams are anywhere...

The 1130 does not have a consumer adjustable presser foot. Check to be sure you are using the correct presser foot .Some feet are slightly different in height which is how the pressure is regulated. If this is not your problem it will need to be seen by a technician.
