Refill light is on even though I never use the refill tank and the unit will not start. If I push the refill clip by hand it starts but dies when I remove my hand from the refill clip

If it is an older unit, it may be low on Freon (they _do_ use freon). There is no way to refill a closed system. The only other possibility is a bad pressure switch, and again, it involves the type of appliance that nobody supplies parts for (and are usually not user serviceable anyway). Sounds like your float is stuck in the full position, or the sensor that shows full is stuck on full.
If tank is empty but shows full, problem lies where full signal is coming from.
Probably have some plastic clips on the inside, like a car dash or door cover..try using a standard screwdriver and lightly pry open could also slide off
The
tank may be full. Your dehumidifier has a safety device that turns off
the dehumidifier when the water tank is full. Usually the tank itself
either presses against a switch or there's a device connected to the
tank that triggers a switch when the tank is in place and full.
If
you've emptied the tank and the unit doesn't run, inspect the place
where the tank rests to see if there's a switch or mechanism that's not
being activated. You may be able to turn it on with a simple flick of
your finger.
Take out the bucket and locate the bucket full switch inside the cabinet. Depress the switch and see if it comes on. If so, you may have to add a shim to the bucket or strap it in with a bungie cord as the bucket is jiggling and makes the unit think that it has been removed.
It can be recharged but you would first have to locate and fix the leak and then refill. Then add a schraeder valve and refill at the port till suction line is cold to touch and starts to sweat. That's it!
I have the same problem on ocassion.
I just remove and reseat again , making sure the front of the tank is flush with the unit. sometimes a little more push in does the trick
