The paper picked up from the cassette is fed to the registration roller using the vertical path roller driven by the main motor (M204). The registration roller is not
rotating when paper reaches there, so an arch is formed at the leading of the paper to prevent skewing. The DC controller PCB turns on the registration clutch
(CL203) at the prescribed timing to transfer the main motor rotation to the registration roller, thus feeding the paper to the delivery tray through the transfer, sepa-

Often a carriage jam is caused by a paper jam. If you're getting a carriage jam message and a paper jam message, this video should help. You-Tube video "wPjahOY5CDo" placeholder
Clean the sensor on the right side bottom of the carriage assembly with a damp Q-tip. That sensor gets covered with ink and can't see the paper properly. You clean the underside that looks down at the paper as it passes thru...
I just went thru this same problem and I spent 1 hour with HP customer service and we came to the conclusion there is a malfunction with the printer's main sensor. They are sending me a new printer. I also had a problem with making copies and it would only print out 1/4 of the page. I think the sensor is TOO sensitive and if you get a paper jam and you try to pull it out, it creates a problem with the sensor. I suggest two things #1. call HP and go thru the 1 hour and they will determine the same and they will send you a new printer. #2.You can wait, if you have a spare printer, until I receive mine to see if the same thing happens. It could be a defective sensor with this model. I have an older HP PSC 750 and it still works great!
There is a workaround for this problem by tricking the printer.
The paper sensor, on my printer model hp4500 seems to only sense the paper at the beggining of the print job.
What I did to trick the printer to print on odd size paper is slide the paper adjuster to 8.5 and put a regular white sheet in. Then put your odd size paper under it. When you print your document set the number of copies to 2 and print.
The printer is going to sense that the paper is correct, and start the job.
Here is the tricky part... once the first 8.5x11 sheet is almost all the way through quickly slide the paper adjuster over to match the size of your odd width paper. The printer should pick up the odd paper and print the second copy. Fool you printa! You should be able to do batches of odd paper size under the first 8.5X11.
I hope this helps.
