Hi Andrew:
It is quite possible that the blade is bent or the metal "grass discharge guide" has been damaged.
If you have a pickup truck handy and you can put the mower facing outward on the tailgate, this procedure is easier.
- remove the spark plug lead to ensure that the mower cannot accidentally start.
- Push the handle down so that the mower is tilted back and the underside of the cutting deck is exposed.
- slowly rotate the blade and see where it contacts (or has been contacting any metal parts.
- remove and replace the blade if it has been bent. (They can be straightened but it is not recommended)
- Use 2 hammers (one as a "dolly") to straighten or repair any bent sheet metal.
- Replace the plug lead and go cut grass.
Cheers

Craftsman lt 1000

Sounds like you installed the blades backwards, so the blunt edge of the blades are hitting the tall grass. This would cause the engine to bog down and almost die.
When replacing blades, always note the direction of the cutting edge. If possible, take a digital photograph of the old blades so you can refer to the picture so you can be sure of the direction.
If you go to Sears.com and search your model number, you should be able to find an owners manual that tells you how to install the blades.

What causes my 13.5 hp craftsman model #917270412 engine to die when i release the clutch

My question would be what caused the belt to break. Have you checked under the mower deck to make sure the blades turn freely? Could be that something is jamming them and causing the motor to die. Or even a blade that hit something hard might be bent against the top of mower deck.

Seems like you hit something with the blades and you snap the keyway on your flywheel. Remove flywheel nut check the keyway and magnet in the flywheel to clean the coil and gap 0,8 mil.

I hit a metal pipe with my cub cadet zero turn lawn mower today. Now it smokes under the deck when I engage the blades and it is not cutting the grass. Have I ruined my mower?

You'll need to look under the deck w/ the mower not running and see why the blades aren't turning. Most likely something is bent (maybe blade) and hitting something. The smoke is probably from the belt slipping and getting hot.

Uncut grass in center & higher grass cut on right.

Hi, this may sound obvious but make sure the new blade is the same type as the old one and make sure it is not fitted upside down. Spin the blades and make sure the tips are level with each other, this will tell you if the deck is straight where the blade spindles mount. Regards Phil.

My LT 1000 was working fine, and then the blades stopped going. When I backed up and waited a minute - the blades began turning again. Everytime that I hit some higher grass, the blades stopped again. ...

Hi. It sounds to me like the belt that drives the blades are worn. Take note of the routing of the belt, or take a snapshot with a camera, and remove the belt for a sample at your spares shop. Hope this helps

When it starts in makes a noise like medal is rubbing until it gets to full speed then it stops and goes back to normal. This take 3-5 seconds. This is a tore 20 inch ecycler, i have had it about a year.

The first thing I would do is to look under the deck and see if the blade is hitting up against what I call a ring wall. This ring wall is in almost all mowers wether electric or gas. I believe it,s designed to keep the cut grass from clumping up under the deck and not discharging out the shoot. Sometimes grass, twigs, rocks, etc. get caught behind this wall PUSHING the wall out towards the blade. The blade in turn starts hitting the wall making the sound you are hearing.
First removed any grass from behind the wall, second take a hammer and tap the wall back to were it should be. Rotate the blade buy hand to see if their is clearance, if so you should be ready to mow again. GOOD LUCK.
