Uneven thread tension in same line of stitches

Hi,
I've just bought a Brother XL2230 sewing machine (I'm a beginner, but have tried to make sure I've read the manual etc before setting it up). The problem is that I can't get the thread tension right - it's either too loose or too tight on the top, even in the same line of stitches. I am using Gutermann thread, which I thought was quite good and which I bought in the fabric shop, and the needle is the one that came with the machine so should be brand new. The fabric I'm using is like curtain fabric, so a bit heavier than cotton, but not as heave as canvas or denim.
Help! I'm really trying to keep enthusiastic about my new purchase, but it's driving me nuts!
thanks.

Why is the bobbin thread looping and catching on my sewing machine? The stitches are uneven, too.

Hi Sylvia,
Your problem is an un-matched tension of the threads. You mentioned doing an adjustment recently. That is the problem area.
If your bobbin thread develops loops on the top side of the fabric, you need to tighten the bobbin tension.
There is no easy method for this and you will have to do it slowly -
tighten, test, re-tighten, test.... until you get a near perfect stitch.
I haven't come across a portable device specifically designed to set thread tensions.

try changing the needle
try adjusting the top thread tension to 3 or 4
rethread the machine top & bobbin
make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly
& also wound correctly

Thread tension

try changing the needle first--make sure the needle is the correct one for the fabric being sewed.
if you've adjusted the top tension & the bottom stitch still looks the same
it's possible that the top tension dial is needing to be checked to see if it's
working correctly

The stitches on my brother 3125 sewing machines are loose. On the top and bottom. Ive tried to redo my stitching and nothing has worked . Please help !!!

Make sure presser foot UP position. Rethread making sure thread is taut so it can locate tension slots. Rethread needle making sure its up in the needle bar shaft--flat side BACK--thread goes through needle eye front to back. Tension: 4 Jimmy

NEEDLE KEEPS COMING UNTHREADED WILL NOT CATCH IN FABRIC

Make sure you are threading the machine correctly and it has the proper tension. Also check the bobbin the thread has to go thru the little lash

Brother XL2230 Elastic Overlock function not working properly

First of all check your needle size and utility, for the tension machine it must be the same on top and bottom example pull the top thread and the lower thread they must be the same.
When sticthing the elastic you must devide the amount of elastic versus the fabric : dise the amount before stiching
Hope this will help

Uneven stitching from bobbin

Hi there!

Well you're right it's a tension problem.

Sounds like there is little or no tension on the top thread.
You probably have thread stuck in your tension discs. If so, set the tension at zero, open the discs with a small screw driver and blow between them. Sometimes you have to dig it out with tweezers.
Then reset clockwise untill you can feel the tension on the thread when you pull through it. It should be about the same as pulling a mug of tee along a table. (not specific I know - but you get the idea - and I love the tea!)

Hope this helps you.
Richie.

Ls1217 Brother

It sounds like you may have uneven tension between the bobbin thread and the upper thread. You can adjust the tension via a screw on the bobbin case. Turn it clockwise to tighten the bobbin thread tension and counter clockwise to reduce it. It's also worth remembering to check the tension on the presser foot for the material you are using. Check also that the shuttle race is clear of lint etc. Hope this helps
