Humming sound is your magneto going out Dont have any idea of the cost for replacement however it may be cheaper to purchase another microwave than to repair this one. Good Luck

Disconnect the HV transformer leads from the magnetron and the capacitor. Make sure none of the wires are touching the chasis or other parts. If the loud humming sound is still present, it is the High Voltage transformer making the noise. If the noise goes away, it is the High Voltage Capacitor going bad.
*MAKE SURE TO UNPLUG UNIT BEFORE TOUCHING ANY OF THE HIGH VOLTAGE LEADS! ALSO, DISCHARGE THE CAPACITOR BY SHORTING THE TWO SIDES AGAINST EACH OTHER!
From your description it sounds like the magnetron has failed in this oven. That's the part the makes the microwaves to heat the food. It typically fails by shorting out and making a loud hum noise. It not usually worth fixing since the price of a replacement magnetron is almost as much as a new oven.
possibly the "stirrer" motor - this is in the top and turns a metal reflecting ring to disperse the microwaves around the oven more evenly. About $70 on GE site for my oven.
Word has it that many of these models have a defect which causes the microwave energy to be reflected back to the magnetron, causing damage to the magnetron, and eventually damaging the high-voltage diode too.
Also, the fuse or the magnetron theral cutout / thermostat can eventually blow, too.
There is a replacement magnetron and stirrer kit available.
I would definitely call the GE Answer Center at 800-626-2005 about this. It's not considered a recall, but a "campaign".
They may pick up part of the cost. It's not cheap.
