On some vehicles the FUEL PUMP can be accessed from under the rear seat without lower the gas tank. It would help to have more information about what your dealing with. I had trouble with my 1999 buick century, it wouldnt start. it ended up being a fuel delivery issue the shop i took the car to said i need a new fuel pump and sending lines, however i couldnt rationalize spending the money they were asking. I ended up fixing the fuel pump myself without spending any money. I got my infiormation from http://autoabsolute.ca they have an expert help section, i explained my problem and they sent me a detailed tutorial with a video that made fixing my car a breeze.

DO NOT DRILL A HOLE! Drop the tank!
Your basically guessing when you drill the hole AND the heat generated by the drill could ignite any fuel that is in the tank!
If there isn't an access panel under the rear seats, dropping the tank is the ONLY safe way to do this. It's a pain in the tail-bone job but its the safest method.

I just did a 97 Regal yesterday and yes you are correct...the strip must be removed to gain access...depending on model you may have to remove the cushioning panel (piece of upholstery panel) on the inside of trunk lid...follow this video URL as it explains the removal better in video form than written..basically remove the 7 10mm nuts holding panel on, lower trunk lid a little and wiggle panel off, twist socket and remove to gain bulb access..install is reverse procedure ...Regal, Century and LeSabre are all same idea/setup Tail Light Change 1997 2005 Buick Century 2004 Buick Century Custom 3 1L V6

You have to pull the fuel tank to replace it.It should run continuously if the engine is running , if the key is just on it will only run for two seconds to prime fuel system .

I have a buick lesabre 2000 and my gas gauge is giving me a incorrect reading. Does this mean I need to get a fuel injector cleaner done?
No, the problem is with the fuel level sending unit in the gas tank. This is normally a substantial repair task. Fortunately, your sender is sold separate from the fuel pump and both are accessible from the trunk under the spare tire. The labor should only be a couple of hours. Please let me know if you have any questions.


  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Drain the fuel tank.

  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    CAUTION When removing the fuel sender from the tank, the reservoir bucket is full of fuel. Use caution in containing the fuel.

    NOTE Note the direction the strainer is pointing.


    Negative battery cable Spare tire and jack Trunk lining Fuel sender access panel Sender and quick connect fittings from the sender Electrical connector from the sender and position harness and hoses aside
    Sender retaining ring Sender and take note of its position Fuel sender O-ring and discard it

I know the fuel pump is in the tank but my maen question is can i get it through the trunk or do i have to drop the tank. can u send me a pic?
Unfortunately you have to drop the tank. You have to remove quick connect fuel lines and more. Use a floor jack to support the tank, remove the tank strap retaining bolts, lower the tank enough to remove fuel sending connection, remove the tank, rotate lock ring counterclockwise. You need more information to remove the strainer from the pump and to pull the pump assembly out.

How do I replace my fuel level sensor on a 2000 buick le sabre? The gauge jumps up and down or eithet stays on full.
Access via trunk, remove carpet and find inspection cover, remove to access fuel level sending unit which is attached to the fuel pump.

Trunk release button won't work, remote will
not entirely sure about your buick, but I have a 2000 pontiac that has a switch just inside the glovebox that deactivates the trunk switch. that, together with locking the glovebox would prevent someone with jsut the valet key from gaining access to the trunk area.

Replace fuel pump in 2000 buick leSabre3.8 v6
You should be able to replace the fuel pump through the trunk. Beneath the carpet in the trunk should be an access panel. Once you remove that panel, all the electrical connections and fuel lines can be disconnected. Remember to disconnect the negative battery cable prior to service, and to take necessary precautions in regards to fuel spillage that may occur. I hope this helps.
