What voltage power supply is needed for an old Maxtor FWRA080 external hard drive?

This hard drive has a 4-=pin connector for power. I'm missing the transformer block and wall plug. I'm thinking I need 5v to unit.

I have a maxtor 120GB external hard drive but no power supply. How do I get a replacement? I tried a switchable power adapter from a local hardware shop and although I set the voltage to 12v it lights up...

Hi Dave.

The problem you are having is the adaptor you tried is the right voltage but not the correct ampage. You require a 12v dc adapter with a rating of at least 1-Amp. The switchable supply you purchased would be well under the required level, probably 400ma (milli-amp), in other words about half the needed amount. A cable modem power adapter would be sufficiant. If you have one, make sure it is the correct voltage and polarity, positive pole (+) usually the inner pin on the end of the connector. Hope this is of some help to you.

What size power adapter do I need

According to several sites, the power supply is 12V, positive tip. You can find this at Radio Shack or your favorite electronic surplus store. You should take the Maxtor with you so you are sure the power connector fits.
Alternatively, you can check with a Maxtor vendor for the part.

What external power does SmartDisk FireLite FWFL120-N take?

Many USB power supplies will have the right plug. I picked one up by buying a cheap USB hub, What you want to look for (most likely on the bottom of the power supply) is VOLTAGE Output: 5.0 VDC, POWER Output: 1.0 amp or (1000ma) and the center hole is the positive side. I have even seen some BluTooth earpiece charges that supply what you need.

Hope that this will help.

I have lost the external power supply for my 1TB laCie (300797U). I have another power supply that has physically the right connector, but I'm not sure if the voltages are right. The supply I have is a...

The voltages are right because hard drives use 12volts for the motor drive and 5volts for the digital logic circuits.
The only thing I don't know is the correct voltages for the various pins, there is a possibility it may not suit the LaCie.
This maybe a standard configuration for external USB hard drives, you need to check with LaCie.

IT LOOKS DEAD

Need some more information to help you. Does your drive even spin up? If not, are the extra 4 pins you are referring to similar to the standard power pins on the PATA drives? If so they are to be used with power supplies that do not have the SATA power connector. You can use EITHER the SATA power connector(15 pin) OR the other 4 pin power connector. NOT BOTH !!! If the pins are not power connectors, then you are probably referring to jumper pins. Ensure that that all the jumper pins are open. If the drive still does not spin up, the pin 11 on the SATA power cable is probably floating indicating a delayed spin up mode. In this mode, the drive will need the PHY initialization sequence from the system before spinning up. You can override this by grounding pin 11 of the 15 pin SATA power connector. Refer to the attached picture for clarification. If you still have questions send me a comment.
