Or it could be the incorrect bulb for the machine or if purchased from a secondary market, ie China, etc. I've purchased a replacement bulb from eBay and even though it was guaranteed to work in the machine, there is a lip on the bulb that prevents it from being inserted completely into the machine. Might be best to purchase an authentic replacement bulb from a dealer.

Barb, do you still have old bulb, look at bulb to see if filament is indeed broken, also check new bulb.
If bulbs are OK, the problem is in the bulb socket or its wiring.
You may want a tech. to look at it, if this is the case.

Cxl manual

User's Manuals, including yours, are available as a free download the Singer Sewing Machine website. Actually, when you enter CXL you get the XL-50 user's manual, which is essentially the same machine, although a few of the patterns may be different. The CXL, XL-50, XL-10 and XL-1 are basically the same machine; I own a CXL and XL-50, and love them. They can sew SIDEWAYS--straight AND zigzag stitch!

Are you using the embroidery foot? I don't have a Quantum, but on my machine you have to switch from a regular foot to the embroidery foot.

I have a quantum cxl. It will sew normal stiches but it will not sew the decorative stiches

The needle shaft sticks to the curved arm and won't come down because a piece of plastic, about an eighth of an inch thick had broken from age. It prevented the shaft from staying up on the needle arm. Open the cover, try to stitch decorative stitch and see what I mean. Purchase a package of 4-10 by 1/2 nut and bolt pack. Screw the nut all the way onto the bolt. Using needle-nosed plyers, Carefully bend the curved arm slightly, and place bolt into the hole on the top of the needle shaft. Nut will keep it in place. Lowering the needle shaft using wheel, carefully bend arm back in place. Try decorative stitch. It should work. It does for me.
