That sounds like an LCD panel or the part that sends the electrical signal to it..The TV sends small electrical signals through the panel with small variations which cause the picture to appear. If either one of those goes bad,the picture will disappear.Since you were able to get a good picture with a couple of tries,I would say the emitter died.It didn't quite want to get working, but it did. Then it finally said okay, uncle! Please let me know how you make out.As I said,it could be either, but I lean towards emitter.Good luck!
If everything else works - there is sound and high voltage (static on the screen) - but there is no picture (including no on-screen menus), this limits the likely area of problems is the video output circuitry or CRT filament connections. Check to see if the CRT filaments are glowing. If they are not glowing, check for bad soldering on the CRT neck board and around the flyback transformer.
Where the picture is erratic - coming and going entirely or changing brightness suddenly, with power off, remove the picture tube socket (carefully!) and clean the pins with fine sandpaper and use contact cleaner on the socket. This source of bad connections can result in a variety of erratic symptoms. Check for bad solder connections on the CRT neck board. Good luck...

It seems to be that your display backlight is gone.
There are small lamps behind the display, any technician can replace that.
If you want to replace them yourself, you have to measure the voltage on the legs of those lamps.
This sounds like the front panel assembly(FPA) switches are acting up. What happens with this model is the FPA switches start to conduct just as if someone was pressing the buttons. This in effect locks up the system control or causes it to do erratic things. The way to determine if the FPA is bad is to remove it by unplugging from set. This requires front panel disasembly. Note:The remote will still work with the FPA removed so the set can be tested. Let me know if you need more help or info.
Not knowing what to do, I tried anything that could possibly help: I installed fresh batteries and I pushed the reset button on the back of the calculator (Sharp EL-546L) and finally, it work all right after more than 5 years I own the calculator and where it did work correctly for 5 minutes. I tried the reset button in the past (long time ago) and it didn't work. This time it worked because, maybe, I've used fresh batteries. Marcello
Let me guess...Sony Cybershot? If you're still able to view pictures clearly but when taking pictures the display looks distorted or black, it's most likely caused by the CCD sensor chip. By the way, even if it's not a Sony it can still be the same problem.
After 3 years, I finally decided to open up the TV and do some troubleshooting. Found out the problem, It was a blown capacitor Location C554 Capacitor value is 2200uF 16V - costs about a dollar to replace yourself and the TV works brand new.
