Empted water on first rinse then tried to spin there was a loud knock and grating sound we turned the washer off straight away , then I tried on a spin cycle drum kept moving slightly but would not spin and then shut down
Sounds to me like your washer tub had a very unbalanced load in it (heavy blankets, jeans, or pillows, all piled to one side instead of evenly distributed around the inside of the tub), and it threw it off balance. When it began to wobble and knock, it may have broken the mechanics underneath the tub which make it spin. The only way to properly diagnose it is if you remove the outer casing of the washing machine and look beneath the tub for broken/out of place items.

It could possibly be a motor coupler that has broke. Its a small rubber disk mounted on plastic drive joints. Its located between the motor and the transmission. This coupler is made to rip or break in case of something more serious, sort of like protection for the motor or transmission. Jim

sometimes the agitator gets loose, causing the drum to sway to far all over the place.make sure its tight , remove the softener dispenser (manual nut), then tighten the metal nut that holds the agitator down
