Sometimes it is because your DVD disc is not supported. Sometimes it is because the DVD player is too old for the DVD playback. You can check on this article to solve the problem:

Hi Nigel,
There are three reasons for discs not playing.
First, if the set has been lying for some time, the loading belt becomes lose and the loading is not complete. The result is no disc play.
Second, there is dust on the lense. Again the result is no disc play.
Third, the lense unit has gone bad or weak. Here also the result is no disc play.

Dvd player won't play disc

The DVD read head may need to be cleaned. Sometimes perfectly OK drives also fail to read certain discs. If the problem is persistent, i.e. the notebook won't read any discs, then clean the head (with a head cleaner) and try again. If it starts working, fine.. If not, then you may have to replace the DVD drive. If the problem is only related to playing one particular DVD, then its the DVD that is faulty.
Hope this helps.

All discs are ejected with a disc error message. why is that. it played fine before

This is due to following possibilities:
1. the lens of the DVD player is dusty, need cleaning or 2. due to laser lens gone faulty need replacement

Readable DVD's but not CD's

That is a faulty lens. The lens reads DVD and CD on different laser beam frequencies. To read the TOC initial track the lens must focus on the laser beam reflected by the disk. If the lens is opaque, scratched or dirty, sometimes it can focus on DVD but not on CDs or the opposite.
Try using a cleaner disk, if that does not work buy a replacement drive. Today you can get a dual layer DVD RW for less than $30.

Dvd player reads no disc and than shows loading

Have you tried other DVD's...you might have a bad one.

If so,,,you may need to clean the laser diode. You'll need cottonless swabs (no lint swabs) and Isopropyl alcohol 99%.

Might be hard to get to, depending on the model, but gently swab the diode lens. Don't saturate it tho.

good luck

Won't play disc, reads no disc

Hi, well I see this type of thing in my Lab alla time unfortunately it sounds if ya DVD has gone faulty... an all too common occurrence these days.. the Laer seem to be very "Frail" You could try a cleaning Disk, but they seldom work.. but sometimes? all ya can do is replace it with another good DVD.. OR if thats not possible use any AV input and connect a remote DVD player that way.. a bit of a hassle, but it's a work around anyway.

DVD disc is not recognised

itsmylife70, hello.

Two things, Laser gone low and can't read dvd. Just try cleaning the collimating lens with a cotton swab and glass cleaner. gently wet one end and dry residue with the other end.
The other thing is could be just a mutilated loom (flex) cable connecting the laser from the main pcb board. Laser is most likely gone bad.

Good luck.

Need owners manual.

some dvd players have two emitting diodes. one for the play back of the dvd and the other for mp3 and cd's. the emitting diode that plays the dvd need to be either calibrated, cleaned or replaced. try to clean the emitting diode with a cd lens cleaner. if it did not work, then try to calibrate it. there is a small tiny knob near the emitting diode. mark the original position of the knob then try to play with it. if nothing happens, the emiiting diode need to be replaced.good luck

Some dvds no longer play

well, seems like your laser diode is getting old. you need to change the diode. what you are experiencing is the start of a dying diod. it will start to rejects cd and soon enough it will not spind at all on all the cd's. so change the emitting diode. good luck
