You can try also to do reformat your hard drive as fresh unallocated one before doing formatting again to install windows. And check your installation disk for scratches.
the smbus controller holds the driver for ur audio device so first try to set the smbus controller driver
if it again shows a ? mark in device driver nothing happenns just make a forced installation of ur audio driver
I RUN BOTH XP AND VISTA ON THE SAME SYSTEM YOU ARE BEST TO PARTITION THE DRIVE AND PUT THEM IN SEPERATE SECTIONS, I USE XP FOR KIDS OLDER LEARNING PROGRAMS WITH 256 RESOLUTION AND UPTODATE PC ON VISTA SIDE. AFTER FDISK FORMATING DRIVE I FIRST INSTALLED XP IN PARTITION THEN UPGRADED WITH FRESH INSTALL OF VISTA TO SEPERATE DRIVE , WHEN BOOTS ASKS YOU WHICH START UP SYSTEM YOU NEED N U LOAD DRIVERS IN NORMAL WAY AND GET DRIVERS OFF INTERNET , U CAN USE VISTA SETUP TO GET DRIVERS PUT ON DONGLE THEN RELOAD ON XP AND LOAD DRIVERS.
YOU WILL HAVE TO ADD A PARTITION TO YOUR DRIVE IF GOT SPACE AND DONT WANT TO START FRESH. THEN SEE IF XP CAN BE LOADED ONTO IT ILL TRY IT ON MY SYSTEM TO C IF LET U GO BACKWARDS RATHER THAN UPDATING
All xp drivers for your computer including your audio card can be found here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3694966
install the audio drivers and if that doesn't work update to SP3 which should increase your compatability.
Please check If your CD drive is detected on BIOS, if yes then Put a Windows XP bootale CD (checkout for the Service Pack) and choose boot from CD in the BIOS and go for "repair option" after the Agreement "I Agree-press F8" session. complete the installation then try installing the printer.
Check out any hardware that doesnot supports windows xp. remove that and reload the os. it works.
or
remove all the additional addon cards like modem, network card, printers etc., (just maintain only hard disk, cd rom and floppy drive)then install the os. once os installs add the components one by one to so that the os will detect one by one
cheers!
